Please I'm at my wits end! Himem.sys does not load extended memory! I have tried everything form HIMEM /M:1-17 and copying it to the root directory. I have a 386 MS DOS 6.21 machine and cannot load MFW 3.l1 because of a lack of extended memory. The version of HIMEM.sys is 3.10 which is compatible with DOS 6.21. I don't understand the problem?
Config.sys:
DEVICE=c:\dos\himem.sys
DEVICE=c:\dos\emm386.exe NOEMS
FILES=30
BUFFER=40
STACKS 9,256MAybe my Autoexec file is wrong.
AUTOEXEC.BAT:
@echo off
path c:\dos
set temp=c:\dosIf anyone can help please do so. I have tried everything. Nothing works without extended memory.

Check the amount of memory you have, if it is 1mb or less dos will not load the extended memory manager because you don't have any. Extended memory is memory over 1mb

Hi,
I read all your posts and the problem seems very strange. May be it's stupid to suggest, but can you confuse XMS - extended memory for EMS - expanded memory? With your configuration you really must not have EMS memory because of NOEMS switch in EMM386 line. If I'm right try to replace NOEMS with RAM switch. In that case you will have both EMX and XMS memory.
Good luck, Igor M

Sorry, just forget something. You never said how much RAM you gave in your computer. As far as I remember WIN 3.11 needs at least 4M to work. WIN 3.1 can work with as little RAM as 2M but in standard mode only. If you have lesser than 4M RAM in your computer you never get needed amount of XMS.

My parents have a Celeron 400 with 64 mb of RAM running on Windows 98. Yet their computer (new by the way) gets an XMS error too whenever I try to take it into SAFE MODE!! It says "Himem.sys has detected an unreliable XMS memory @ 00C4CA14. Press enter to continue starting windows." I hit Enter and then it says "Himem.sys is missing. Windows has halted. Press cntrl alt del to restart." Is this a bad memory chip?? I don't know what's going on!!
