Whenever I type, “command” in “run” I get a message, "An Extended Memory Manager is already installed. XMS Driver not installed" and my PC beeps.
How do I get rid of this message? I am sure it maybe related to my SoundBlaster, which is no longer installed because it refuses to work in XP. I also tried to find the EMM386.exe to delete it and I could not find it. Any help is greatly appreciated. Oh if you going to tell me how to do it, please tell me in real simple and clear way. I really suck at this Dos and sysedit thing. Thanks

Since I do not have XP yet I should stay out of this except for one observation.
An extended memory manager and an XMS driver usually both refer to HIMEM.SYS. So it sounds as if the version of HIMEM.SYS loaded is not compatible with command.com, but Windows is famous for misleading error messages. Can you shell to DOS from the
DOS PRMPT menu icon? Command.COM might be corrupt. You could call Microsoft tech support about it if it persists.

Say, does Windows XP even have a DOS function except for the startup disk? If it does not, that is the reason for the problem.

I have the same thing, but my symptoms are: I keep getting an Illegal Operation, and when I click on details, it says "browser caused invalid page fault in module kernel 32.dll at 0167:bff7b992. If problem persists, contact program vendor."
This Illegal operation locks up everything and I have to control-ault-delete to get end task. I have to log on all over again and get almost to the same place on my web site and the same thing happens. Or, when I go to sign on, a window comes up asking me to OK my printer to print, and my printer is turned off, or I get a grey "unknown zone" when trying to read my e-mail.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Jim

Win 98 SE , Getting the same message i just formatted and reintsalled windows , i figured out from a previous message VXD Vcache that it could be a memeory issue , so what i did is i have 3 mem sticks 2 32MB's and 1 128 MB , and after testing i figured out it was the 128 MB stick giving me the problem must be bad memory , i installed it by itself got the Message about HiMEM, installed the others and My PC works with out a glitch ,, so maybe its bad memory i'am still searching for answers .. but i hope this helps you .
