Subject: Wrong version of DOS |
Comment: Here's the story, old 100DX with two HD's, One 162meg as master other 540 as slave. Have 3.11 installed. Tried to install win98, by said need more room, so it quite. Now I have get the old missing operating system. Tried the old boot disk things work ok. did the sys c:\ asnd still missing the system. So what else but fdisk and format. It won't let me format the disk it said wrong version of DOS. I think win98 installed some file on the disk which has screwed thing up, probly DOS 7 and I have dos 5 and the system. It would even let me install dos 6.2 So how do I fix the drives? I can still get to the CD-ROM and the HD using the boot disk(old one) Any help I'm at the end of my rope with this one Thanks Shawn P

Reply: (edit)Hi, If you got wrong version message then you probably run Format not from old boot disk but from C: drive, or Format.com program on you doot disk actually not correspond to DOS version. If you have Fdisk.exe file on the boot disk run it and see if your C: drive set active. Then you can try to use FDISK /MBR command to restore Master Boot Record. As for Win98 installation. It need about 160M to install, so you really can't install it to the C: drive, but you however can install it to D: drive. It's no difference where to install Win9x. I had Win95 and now Win98 installed on my D: drive without a problems. Good luck, Igor M

Reply: (edit)He will have to make the 540mb drive the master because win95-98 will only install on the 1st drive
