I'm looking for a decent, up-to-date DOS word processor but can find only abandonware out there on the web. Suggestions?
John Lowell

The most recent and up to date word processor and office suite for DOS is NewDeal Office It's quite the thing and very reasonably priced at a MSRP of $69.95 US. You can get it quite a bit cheaper though, I picked up a copy from a computer store in Vancouver for $49.95 CDN.

Doof,
Many thanks for your reply, Doof. At the moment, I'm running only pure DOS applications and small ones at that, and have had nothing in the way of a need for extended memory. Hence CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT are quite limited in scope on this computer. Would New Deal Office be likely to assert a large enough claim on memory to force changes in this regard?
John Lowell

Absolutely not. It's memory requirements a stunning low: 286, 386 or 486 -- 640K to 10 MB max (ya really gotta work to use that much extended memory, the most I could use was 6.4 MB).

Doof,
One more follow-up if I may. I'm told that New Deal is an "operating system". Am I to understand that it's an operating system in the same sense that DOS or Windows are operating systems?
Incidently, I tried to download New Deal Office evaluation software from their site and kept getting server errors. One gets the feeling that sampling in this case may not be so easy to do. :-)
Regards.
John Lowell

The download script has had problems for a while now. Sorry about that. Yes, it is an operating system that loads from DOS, GEOS to be exact. I really can't tell you when the demo will be available again as Carole went on extended vacation to the East and forgot to leave her current password with the Admin. Well, that's Vancouver for ya. :-) I may pop over sometime this month and kick it in the a*s.

Newdeal is an operating system in the same sense that windows 3.1 is. In other words, you load dos, then you load newdeal. John I have a copy of it on my computer here, do you want me to e-mail it to you?
-Michael

I try to be nice. However it turned out to be a little more complicated than I thought, but I think we got it working in the end.
To future readers of this thread, please do not bother e-mailing me to get a copy of this program. Unfortunately it is too large to send to everyone so I will have to deny any future requests for the file.
