winxp/dos printing

I have a dos program which prints to a local okidata 320Ibm mode printer. In 98 it works fine. In xp it prints half a page, waits 2 minutes, then prints the rest. If I set it to"print directly to printer" there is no change in performance. If I close the program instead of waiting it starts printing immediately. This problem occurs in win98 if "spool ms-dos print jobs" is selected. There is no such box in an xp system. Any suggestions on how to get it working? I have also tried another lptport, switching port mode from exp to standard, forcing an irq to the port, loading sp1, loading a chipset update. It prints the report fine but takes a long time. Please help

When you installed the printer on xp. It should of asked if you use this printer to print ms-dos jobs. Then you will see the spool ms-dos jobs check box.
