"Doofus" is wrong. I have an IBM 5160 Personal Computer 8088 (XT) and it will run MS-DOS 6.22.
Scandisk, Defrag, MSAV, and more work on these old pre-IDE hard drives just fine.
If you don't have MS-DOS on 5¼" floppies just SYS a floppy and then copy SYS.COM and FORMAT.COM to it and boot your XT and format the drive with the /s option. Then you can copy the rest of the DOS files to its HD later.
