I've just built a Win98/Linux box from scratch, and in preparing to
install Mandrake Linux, rebooted into DOS to run scandisk before partitioning
my hd. I get the following message:There is not enough free conventional memory to check a disk.
You may need to remark (REM) some device drivers from your CONFIG.SYS
file. Or, in your CONFIG.SYS file, you may need to load the EMM386.exe
driver to load your other device drivers into the Upper Memory Blocks
using DEVICEHIGH= statements.
What's this all about? Scandisk runs in Windows. Although I'm a grizzled
Linux veteran, I freely admit to being a DOS neophyte. This is the
system, more or less:Win98 2nd Ed.

Creative Graphic Blaster Riva TNT 16 MB
Creative Sound Blaster Live! Value
Toshiba SD-M1212 6X-DVD-ROM
Hollywood Plus DVD/MPEG-3 Decoder CardHere's my config.sys:
device=C:\WINDOWS\himem.sys
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.exe
DEVICE=C:\CDPRO\VIDE-CDD.SYS /D:MSCD001Thanks.

Hi,
To free more conventional memory try to modify your Config.sys file as follows:
dos=high,umb
device=C:\WINDOWS\himem.sys
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.exe ram
DEVICEhigh=C:\CDPRO\VIDE-CDD.SYS /D:MSCD001Then in Autoexec.bat file add LH modificator before any TSR program. For example:
LH Keyb.com
And after all why you need to run Scandisk in DOS if you can do that from Windows?
Good luck, Igor M

The suggested config.sys is not quite right. You must run the C:\windows\himem.sys before attempting to load anything high. It is usually the first line in the config.sys
