This is an XP question not a DOS question, as there is no M$DOS in XP only an emulation.

If you read this NT4 article which also applies to W2K, W2K3, XP it may help you understand:

Here are the warning messages Justin has just added:

"DO NOT ask questions regarding the DOS "command" prompt for Windows NT, 2000 or XP on this forum. Use the Windows NT, 2000 or XP forum, respectively.

All DOS scripting questions must be directed to the Computing.Net Programming Forum."

You should try VDMSound if you want to have sound in "Windows NT/2000/XP Command Prompt(Console)"

The 32BitOS XP takes the resources of your soundcard. Then, wen an old DOS-prog try to acess it , itīs allready in use by the OS
and not avaible. As long as the Sounddriver supports not the DOS-Emulator Option you wont get sound. If you have a SB-card with
DOS-Emulator in driver,choose 220 7 1 for SB-sound. Reason: 32bit NT-based windows-versions protect acess to hardware with theyr HAL-Layer-Architecture,preventing
direct acess from Programs.

Try this one-

I used the program VDMSound listed on this site to fix the problem and it worked rather well.
