I just formated my friend's old laptop, a Everex Tempo LX (386SX, 1 MB of RAM). I'm going to install Windows 3.1 on it, but I was wondering which version of DOS sould I install. I had installed IBM PC-DOS 7, but it has slowed her computer to a crawl. Also I was wondering where I could download a version of DOS that would work on her laptop. Thanks.

Well, I'm partial to MS-DOS622, although MS-DOS5 or higher should be fine (or the equivalent). The only real benefit to downgrading the DOS would be that lower DOS versions generally have a smaller memory 'footprint'.

A 386SX with only 1 Meg of RAM isn't going to run Win31 all that well.

While I'm trying to install MS-DOS 6.22, I'm told to press Enter. When I do, I get a black bar on the bottom of the screen, and the computer freezes. And I can't find a web site to download any other versions of DOS.

Try FreeDOS beta 8 or DR-DOS 7.03. DR-DOS is free for non-commercial use, and FreeDOS is GPL (free and open source). Both are very compatible with MS-DOS. I do not say completely, because only MS-DOS is compatible with MS DOS. Out of the two, I prefer FreeDOS Beta 8.

DOS 6.22 is best for you, and comes on three floppy discs or same by download.
Normally the first is also a boot disc such that the pc can be started.
Depending on the way the boot disc has been created, sometimes it enters setup/install automatically.
If not, enter install, and it takes you through the setup process.
I seriously think you will have problems with WIN3.1 and only 1mb of memory. Why not upgrade to 4 or 8mb which can normally be done for free as no one wants old memory nowadays.
Good Luck - keep us posted.

pcdos 2000 is much better than msdos 6.22. it has pcmcia drivers which will come in handy for your laptop. it is y2k OK. command syntax the same as msdos 6.22, even the undocumented ones. it has a lot more features than msdos.

The whole time I thought I had a Software problem, until I ran Scandisk. I realized that it was the hard drive, so I downloaded Active KillDisk(http://www.killdisk.com/downloadfree.htm) and formatted my Hard Drive, now I got MS-DOS 6.22, and Windows 3.0 running fine. Thanks for all your help.
