You can get FreeDOS instead. It's not all that stable as Ms-dos (yet), but i i use it to run my favorite dos games and dos apps and it works great.
Im not sure if you can run windows 3.11 on top of it though, but there is a few other options such as other user interfaces.
There is also a version called Ms-dos 7.10, wich is a "distribution" of the version of dos wich is included in win 98/95, but it is an "extracted" version wich you can run as a stand alone OS. On 7.10 you can run windows 3.11.
I also suggest DOS 7.10. Currently I am using it in 5 PC´s 486 (They are my favourite: AMD´s 486 running at 120 MHx on UMC´s motherboard, 80Gb HD, and a Compaq Pressario 486 dx2 66MHz) There are many reazons for my choice: the use of long file names, the no 2GB format limit, and the FAT32. I don´t care windows compatibility!!! Only one cons I found: If you will not use the CDROM, don´t load neither VIDE-CDD.SYS nor MSCDEX.exe because it corrupts all the system, and you will install it again. Yesterday, I also installed NEoS network OS and it also works fine!!!
So, how would I put together a DOS 7.1 (isn't that version of DOS that is included with the Windows 2000?)? Sounds like the best option, short of going out and buying a 6.22 (or finding an unused copy).

You will not get a complete varions of MS-DOS622 with the download. Just a way to update some older versions. The following is a quote from a text file with the download.
"The STEPUP.EXE file contains a downloadable version of Microsoft MS-DOS 6.22 Step-Up.
To use the MS-DOS 6.22 Step-Up, your computer must be running MS-DOS 6, 6.2, or 6.21 in the same language as this version of the STEPUP.EXE file."
I have found a few places where they sell DOS 6.22, but they're doing it for $60 (not cheap!).
The main thing is that I want to be able to have a copy that installs on a clean system that is slightly aged (something like a 486 or something). The reason being, I have some old games I'd like to try again (since they don't run properly on XP's version of DOS).
ROM-DOS, though, I just found out, is for embedded systems only.

I was looking for DOS 6.22 before. I downloaded a copy of ms-dos 7.10 and it works great. My computer was built for Win XP, But I like dos better. I have a copy of DOS 7.10 if you need it. It does not need a registration number.
