I've got a big stack of it right here.

Really old dot matrix printers used the 'tractor feed' sheets, although usually you could switch to plain paper by setting a lever.

Ratboy - heh - that's just charming

Hey there - morning for me, anyways (mmmm, coffee)

Trying to remember that old term - 'friction feed' I believe, as opposed to 'tractor feed'

I use a dot matrix printer all the time:-

OKI Microline ML192

Brilliant, still going strong after around 20 years.

It has a roll holder which takes a single part telex paper roll from NCR.

For good quality, I manually load single sheets of A4 paper and envelopes etc.

For the above, the printer is set to friction feed.

Good luck - Keep us posted.

jboy,

The reason I suggested DOS matrix paper was to prevent a blast os "wrong forum."

BTW, is paper considered hardware?

foldware?

Does this site have a foldware forum?

Perhaps the 'Office' forum?

Yeah, that sailed right over my head this morning

Eh - no such thing as a pure forum around here - all sorts of questions, inappropriate or not, get asked. If it's not too ridiculous, we try and answer'em.

I am still somewhat troubled by the number of XP/NT batch questions we still receive here - I don't see the folks in the Mac or Linux forums being peppered with off topic queries regarding other Operating Systems (maybe we should start?)

Bit of a side issue though, unrelated to this question.

jboy,

Yeah, "DOS" questions from NT users.

Many folks simply don't make the distinction.

For them, DOS means something like:

Boring white text on black

I don't like it

Where's my mouse?

::==
BTW, I'm giong to start a new thread on a subject which really concerns DOS.

In another thread I was trying to help a guy with a "RAM size sniffer".

He sent me the output of MEM so I could get the exact syntax.

Here's what we're working with:

::==

Memory Type Total Used Free
-------- --------
Conventional 604K 67K 537K
Upper 0K 0K 0K
Reserved 0K 0K 0K
Extended (XMS) 65,472K ? 522,956K
-------- --------
Total memory 66,076K ? 523,493K

Total under 1 MB 604K 67K 537K

Largest executable program size 537K (549,408 bytes)
Largest free upper memory block 0K (0 bytes)
MS-DOS is resident in the high memory area.

::==
Is it telling me that the available XMS is about 8 times the total?

Must be new math.

Any idea?

Oh, I know - different DOS (or "DOS"), different rules. That fact that these newbie batchers come here with their questions indicates they have little if any awareness of actual DOS.

Anyhow - sure - he reports 512Mb of RAM in his specs, so that accounts for the 522,956K. Probably running mem from within Windows, and doesn't have things optimized too well (Largest executable program size 537K? That's poor)

jboy,

I don't know if he was shelled out of windows.

The point is, it shows:

(XMS) 65,472K 522,956K

65M total and 522M available

AFAIK, that's normal - something about 64 Megs and limitations of the DOS.

On a machine with 96Mb I get:

Extended (XMS) 65,472K ? 96,392K

jboy,

Thanks.

So for purposes of actually using XMS, I better stick with the lower number.

The point of departure was to size a RAM disk according to available XMS.

I appreciate the help.

Well, I don't know if I would arrive at that conclusion without verification - I believe it's just a quirk as to how mem reports amounts in excess of 64Mb (or something like that).

Not keen on those long involved 'projects' personally (too much like homework assignments)

By "peeeved with" you mean "don't understand"?

I do wonder just what you actually "know about DOS", but nevermind - I can quite happily live without that information

That's really a shame.

If only there were some magical device that would allow you to tap into the knowledge of the world and educate yourself in a civilized fashion. Then possibly you might gain some insight into just how impoverished you really are.

.. maybe one day.

In the meantime, this may help you hone those lacklustre communication skills

I hope that this anymosity and bitterness that I'm hearing here is not real, because if it is then I feel bad for the person- one who is pissed and thus decides to pick on others to get to being as pissed off as he, is truly someone who is in a sad situation until he changes it for the better.

Jboy, no offense intended but in virtually every [other?] post that you post here I hear some form of bitterness. While I'm not being judgemental, I truly hope that you could change the root of it- for your sake if not for everyone else...

Larry

PS- Obviously it is not my business, but I felt that I had to comment.

Larry - with no sense of bitterness whatsoever - buzz off.

You're right, none of your business... yet you seem to feel the need to get involved anyways.

You also could benefit from the use of a dictionary app or online spell checker

Give me ambiguity or give me something else
