im sure you have hurd of freedos here no doubt!, im sure some of you may have seen or hurd of the Ozone Gui for DOS?
i think even jim hall from freedos has seen the new distribution for fdos "Phoenix OS" which hopes to be a Free Desktop system similar ot Linux but keeping it classic aswell as modern. the Desktop enviroment Phoenix Ozone gui is the user interface, it is kind of like Gnome for linux if you have ever seen or used that. its a multitaking environment which features a file explorer mp3 player text editor etc..
Dos is not knowen for its multitasking its always in series 1 then 2 then 3 etc..not 123 at the same time. this os also includes a multitasking enviroment for Freedos so you can run multiple batch files or programs at the same time.(limited to 8 at present)
the whole project is free!, all the programs are open source! and did i mention its free!
so if you are interested just take a look at phoenixos.net.tf or phoenixos.infernohost.net and if you wanna help even if its only stuff like Gfx or batch coding so you have freeware u wanna share just check it out thanks.
PhoenixOS is the code name ie "longhorn" or what ever...thanks for your comment any ideas what we could use then? ie "longerhorn" or maybe "hornlong" alot of the good names are taken by linux now days lol. EBENTU? lol. Softmicro swodniw haha. DOS 2008? bit boring... for now it remain Phoenix AS A Project name because thats all it is at this point.
Yes but phoenixos.infernohost.net you title it "Phoenix Firebird v3.0989 Alpha "PhoenixOS 2008"" which is very confusing.
Actually we have GEM, Spectra etal so is there a need to rehash the OZONE project which died from lack of developers/interest.
This will never be an alternative to Windows/Linux, your time would be better spent on creating an embedded O/S which can be used on a miniPC like the:
hm yes the very basic GUI's for dos and machines from the arcaic days execellent.
why does dos have to be restricted to the image that dos is a dinosaur? Gem is great for lower end PC's no doubt but i think freedos deserves to be more than an os people use to boot their pc's when it crashes.
the development of Ozone is not dead at all i have been in contact with flox the maintainer who is helping on this project there just has not been any public releases for a while.
the name may lack orginality but that can be easly enuf changed. they are FREE Url's anyway.
i could spend my time on those kind of projects but i dont want to do those things,
the only thing coming close to replacing windows is mac at this point (yes, i know linux & unix.) so its very silly to say that this will never replace windows...OBVIOUSLY IT WONT. MAC & Unix Based systems are the only thing that will.
as a mac and linux user i have an old dual CPU PIII PC which i wanted to do somthing with. FreeDOS is awesome and i just wanted a more modern look for dos rather than some of the other (very good) basic GUIS for DOS.
ill admit the name is "cheesy" and needs work. some may find the project exciting and some not. if you are a person that thinks "DOS has been relagated to the past" i wouldnt worry about this project.
thank you for your input ill take this as constructive critasism take waht you have said and make the approprite changes. thanks namstai you guys. lol
OZONE-DOS does have a nice ring to it, and names DO matter in terms of interesting new people in a project. The "-DOS" bit actually conveys information and will show up better in search engines.
**-DOS is not dead, it still has a place in computing and personally try to give all young people who have an interest in computing an insight into "command line" **-DOS.
The problem is that there is nothing NEW to entice anyone but hobbyists and diehards to see it as a viable O/S. BeOS, Amiga, RiscOS are in similar vain.
All I would love is **-DOS to be a viable alternative O/S which I can use day in day out for computing tasks we take for granted in XP. Maybe your goals are different ?
Sorry if you find me negative but how can one enthuse when there is nothing to enthuse about ?
i moved to linux because they still make use of the consol. wea Vista nd Xp are moving to PC for Dummys.
the main problem i have with vista is its all about how "we are better & flasher than mac" i think after 2k they lost the idea of an OS. 2k was stable enough for me. and did not have all the stupid gimmics of XP & Vista. i think home should have all the PC for dummy garbage and Pro should be a complete stripped down version for advanced users. no bells hell no whistles.
i have seen a dr-dos distribution with Arachne, DOS web browser bundled with it. called MultiDOS. i have a copy but never used it.
It's good... It's quite good, actually. I like Ozone GUI for DOS, it's promising. Waiting to see next release. I still have and use an installation of MS-DOS 7.10 (Wengier & Roy's edition!). I would just like to see Ozone GUI load on top of all flavours of DOS, even MS-DOS, not only FreeDos. Is it possible?
yea its a good modern Gui that less nerdy people will take to. a lot of people find the likes of GEM and WINDOS type menus GUI systems to be crusty & old. dos nerds find them useful and easy to use etc.. Ozone is kinda in the middle modern enough for average Joe and simple to use.
There is the NX-DOS project trying to build it from the bottom up in assembly language. Project can use some interested developers to find bugs and submit ideas.
