You do not really need to label your hard drive to install the OS.When you come to this point simply press enter to skip the labeling.Good luck.

Read the post Petit.

you need to put the volume label in before you can delete the partition.

Did you try to rename the volume label in DOS ?
At C: prompt, type LABEL
Will it let you enter another label name ?

That is not an equal sign then? This is a new twist on an old trick of anti pirating software that only marks you. Labels like Ao in DOS cannot be relabelled because you cannot enter a small o in DOS. One way to get rid of Ao is to format the partition and when the volume labelling comes at the end of the format enter a new name.
Get hold of WIPE.exe from the IBM.COM website. It will erase these things also.

Can you ,Rick ,give more details ? What OS were you using for fdisk and format? What size and type of drive? When some fdisk does not work try one from Microsoft: these are more conservative (use Win 98 boot disk for instance). If you need to give info on type of PC to delete partition, use MSD to find exact letters and numbers. The fat comes from formating the drive.Did you try scandisk on that drive. Partitioning is the fastest way to get rid of a problem caused by format.I suggest that you do not use exotic fdisk and other utilities to solve this problem. Have you tried some other spare hard drive. The size is not important as long as it is the same type. You could check this way the keyboard problem.

I have had to deal with this problem many times. Go here:

http://www.rustysmith.com/delpart.htm

download delpart, copy it a floppy and run it
you will be able to delete any partition you want without having to deal with volume lables.
