Dear Sirs
I am writing to ask if somebody can shed some light on a query.
I use Windows 98SE, yet when I type 'ver' at the DOS prompt, I get:
C:\Windows>ver
Windows 98 [Version 4.10.2222]
Does this 4.10.2222 refer to DOS? If not, how can I find out which version of DOS I have? And what does the 4.10.2222 refer to?
I am trying to discover what my version of DOS can and cannot do. For instance, if I type in
C:\Windows>time
Current time is 2:16:26.42p
Enter new time:I get the time, as above.
On the other hand, if I
C:\Windows>edit
I find out that my MS-DOS editor is version 2.0.26. It is copyrighted Microsoft 1995,
yet I use Windows98.Finally, at
C:\Windows>help
Bad command or file namemeaning that I have no DOS Help file.
How can I make sense of these commands - when they work and when they don't - and the dates?
Many thanks
Steve

Dear Steve,
Your first question: Ver
Beginnig from Windows 95 Microsoft embedded DOS under Windows so it is, in some way, hidden. The Ver command showes the version and release number of the Windows product, so Windows 98SE is 4.10.2222 but the DOS associated is known as 7. If you type Command /C Ver you will see a (pseudo) true DOS version set for programming use.
The Edit mistery:
Although hidden, DOS is still alive, so Edit is an improved version of the old MS-DOS text editor as showed by its version info.
Some commands were removed by Microsoft startung from Windows 9X family and Help, tightly related to DOS, was one. To go beyond should bring us too far.
Do not be concerned, if you still want to use DOS in Windows 98, there is no problem, only it requires a bit of patience.

Hello IVO
Many thanks for your informative and useful reply. So, basically, if I wished to find out more about the DOS version I have and what I can and can't do - and how it functions, it's structure, etc - I could possibly just get away with doing a simple search on Yahoo for MS-DOS 7?
Cheers and thanks again
Steve

A Web site you may find interesting is http://www.easydos.com/dosindex.html; Dos 7 is much like 6.22 and 5.00 so every book about thouse versions is a good starting point. Another resource at your hand is the Windows on-line Help that you can recall from the entry located in the Start Menu: look for DOS Commands. Last you may try the /? option for the command, if you know the command name, e.g. type Time /? to see a brief explanation.
Have a nice day.

The DOS for Windows 95 First Edition (4.00.950) is Version 7.0
From Windows 95 OSR2 (4.00.950b) to Windows 98SE DOS is Version 7.10

Hello Luluone and IVO
Both many thanks for all your help and guidance. I'll chase up your leads!
Cheers
Steve
