OK, Some questions on enabling usb support through DOS. This is driving me NUTS. I'm working with Fujitsu and Compaq tablets. I can get the USB CD Drives working fine with floppies. However, every time that I try to burn the floppy to CD this is what happens - the Usbaspi.sys finds the devices w/o a problem. Then it crashes. I get messages about 'the following file is missing or corrupted a:\usbcd.sys' "There is an error in your config.sys file on line 10"

Line 10 will say something like "device=a:\usbcd.sys /d:mscd001" and then I'll have an entry in autoexec bat like "a:\MSCDEX /D:mscd001". Again - this all works fine on the floppy (so drivers are fine) but when I burn to a CD and try to startup - all the trouble begins. This has happened on two separate CD Drives, different tablets, and many different config.sys files. I've also tried lines such as "device=usbcd.sys" or "device=usbcd.sys /d:mscd001", etc. What is different about the CD's that I need to change??? Thank you for any help.

LINE10:

A:\...... is pointing to the A: drive, it needs to point to the correct drive letter

With EZCDCreator 6 in XP when burn a bootable CD it requests the DOS system files, I use a W98 OEM floppy, and it assigns drive A: to bootable CD

Forget my last post, have reread what you said and totally confused:

Whish CD drive are you booting from IDE or PCMCIA or USB??

IF USB do you have 2 CD drives on same controller ??

How have you created the bootable CD's ??

Does your BIOS have a boot from USB CD option??

Which version of DOS are you using??

Also if we could concentrate on one machine, as the USB controllers may differ, it may be easier!

We have Fujitsu 4120p,4121 and Compaq TC1000. The same errors happen on all of them.

I'll go point by point below:

I'm booting from a USB CD-RW/DVD or floppy - there are no IDE...except for HD of course.

Just one CD on the USB Controller. Which Usbaspi.sys picks up fine.

I have created the bootable CD's using various methods...ie Dos disks, win98 boot disks, etc.

The line "device=usbaspi.sys" scans the controllers and finds all devices - then i get the error about usbcd.sys being missing or corrupted.

The bios versions have to enable USB booting since there are no IDE CD drives. This is how the respective restore CD's reimage - wonder if they are using DUSE or something.

We can concentrate on the Fujitsu's - they both have the same controller.

Thank you...

by the way - I changed the line 10 to "device=c:\usbcd.sys /d:mscd001" - no luck, same error.

I think the problem is you are trying to install a Driver for the device which you are using to boot from!

If you look at the Pheonix aka Award BIOS read me it states "The Advanced USB Boot provides enumeration and configuration of an USB CD-ROM, Zip, and Hard Disk drive during POST that enables the ability to boot to DOS from an USB CD-ROM, Zip, or Hard Disk drive that is connected to a system either directly or through a hub(s). Additionally USB CD-ROM, Zip, or Hard Disk drive support enables the use of an USB CD-ROM, Zip, or Hard Disk drive while in a DOS environment."

I am confused by this, as it is not clear, good luck with solving this dilemma!

That is exactly right - I am trying to install a driver for the device which i'm booting from. So how the heck do the restore CD's work? This is quite interesting - even if I extract the boot sector off the restore CD I can't then examine the bin file can I? Hmmm.. back to the drawing board. Thanks for the info on the phoenix bios - that is interesting.

Ghost use DOS based boot disks, the only product I an aware off is True Image from www.acronis.com which I believe does not use DOS boot disks, it may be an alternative?

I think the key here is to create RAMdisks and copy the relevant driver files there so that after a succesful boot from your USB floppy or CD, all essential drivers and programs will consistently load from the correct drive letter.

Picture this - when you create your test disks, your HD partitions are OK and visible (lets say they are C: and D:) so that USBASPI.SYS and USBCD.SYS will map your CD drive to E:

Now when you try to restore images, these letters will change since C: and D: may not necessarily exist!

Of course I am not certain as I do not know what letter a USB HD or CD is assigned when it is the boot device.
