I have recently purchased a Microsoft optical USB mouse for browsing in win98. I can't however use it when I decide to work in DOS raw mode. Can anyone tell me where I might find drivers for my mouse and/or configure it for use with DOS?

Hmmmm.........why use a USB mouse when you have a perfectly working PS\2 port _designed_ for mice, or else a serial port? USB mice aren't any better than PS\2 or serial.

Wow! That anonymous post was REALLY helpful wasn't it.

Robert, USB and DOS don't mix well. Try Microsoft for a driver, if they don't provide one then your mouse will not work under DOS.

Sorry,
Michael

My Microsoft USB Wheel Mouse came with a USB to PS/2 Adaptor plus a DOS Driver. Check the Microsoft web site for driver!

Only because someone had to say it:

That's it, move along.

USB does *NOT* suck.

You get a much higer smapling rate on USB, much smoother control. I know you can crank up the smapling rate with utilities like PS2Rate and such, but these tend to crash your system from time to time. USB's rock for general usage, but mostly for gamers like me, controls are much more precise and smooth, and you can turn much faster. Plus the optical mice are great as well on top of this. Yeah, I'll have to use my PS/2 adapter for dos though too. Ho-hum. No big deal.

If you enable USB mouse and keyboard legacy support in you BIOS you may be able to get your mouse working with a PS/2 mouse driver. this will depend on your motherboard version and BIOS capabilities.

there is a driver called uhci.exe
you have to load it in your config.sys
it has some bugs but it works with my usb mouse.

Another thing USB is useful for is hot swapping the device. I've got a logitech trackball and I bring it to work with me. The ports are on the front, so I don't have to worry about reaching back to plug a cable in. I just makes life that little bit easier...
