I suspect USBASPI.SYS can only handle 1 instance of an ASPI driver or host adapter at a time (regardless of the number of drives installed per host adapter). You probably have other adapters (like SCSI controllers for storage, CDRW, scanner) on your system.

Do try the /h switch - you'll need to identify which adapter corresponds to the ports your USB drive will be connected to.

thanks for the quick reply maybe i should have said it was on a laptop that might help. i've looked through all the posts and can't find anything that actually tells me anything about the /h switch. when the usbaspi driver runs through the scan the results show 1 device which i took as being the usb port but then the hdd driver d1000dd fails with the error is the h/ switch used on this driver

You are referring to this error message which USBASPI.SYS display.

WORNING : Found many ASPI host adapters.
Please put on adapter number by option switch (/H)

However, I haven't encountered this myself, so the best bet is to try and "guess it" as many of us do ;-)

Usual formats for options could be:
/Hn
/H=n
/H:n
where n is the suspected adapter number

HTH

Am sorry I wasn't of much help - I can't seem to get the /h option to work either - but I thought it was because I only had 1 host adapter in the first place.

You might want to try DUSE 4.4 (or newer 4.9) - it seems it has options to allow host adapter selection better than USBASPI.SYS

It's at www.pocketec.net
