USB driver for DOS

Comment:
Need to find software or driver so I can use my USB burner in dos mode. Want to do is burn CD image of my Windows OP system and then restore HDD image back to HDD from USB burner, should system go down.
I typed USB DRIVER under DOS at the computing.net search window at top right, and got over 30 hits of people asking the same questern! Answer, Well try it yourself!

Unless your manufacturer provides a DOS driver for your USB CD ROM Burner, I'm afraid you're out of luck....
There are other ways to do this... You could install a minimal installation of windows 95/98 (with just the CD-R drivers/software) on a small partition (125 megs should suffice, watch your registry size) on your hard drive and boot to it whenever you need to back up the 'main' OS on your PC. It's a little convulated, but it will work...
Wengier, If he has a USB motherboard, why should he need to update his BIOS. Drr Its a OS problem not a hardware problem. which as far as I know, no one has cracked yet.

What I have heard is that Dos doesnt support any USB devices.
There is a basic USB support driver available that can be used to write DOS USB drivers, but it is to expensive to buy, and needs extra programming to work, so is of little use to the end user. As to DOS not supporting USB, its that things like USB & Firewire just did not exsist at the time of MS-DOS 6.22 and Microsoft do not seem that bothered about adding 'Real Mode' support to later versions.

Yo ashley! please send me the usb-dos drivers you mentioned. thanks
Another, easier way to back up and restore a fresh install of your Win 9x system, use a ghost program. I did this with Norton Ghost on a few systems, ghosted the entire HDD to a slave HDD, then burned the Ghost image to a CDR. Since Norton Ghost can be run from a floppy to restore an image--I took a Win98 boot floppy, one that creates a RAM disk. Changed the RAM size, added a boot option to install the Norton Ghost progam from a cab file on a 2nd disk, and had it load an IDE CD-ROM driver. It was sweet, loaded ghost from a RAM disk, started the program, and re-ghosted the image to the HDD, which took all of 6 min. Fresh OS, on a clean HDD. I even tried to reload it on a different sized HDD on the same machine, and Norton Ghost didn't have a problem with the change. You can also do this by booting from a floppy that loads the CD-ROM driver, then run the ghost program from another floppy. Hope that works. :-)
