OK, I have searched the web extensively and this is the only USB dos driver I could find.
Its for an external hard drive.
The hard drvie enclosure I have doesnt come with USB dos drivers, most dont.
This driver(see link) crashes my desktop computer on boot. On my laptop it installs the usb drivers and detects that my device is swithced on but wont let me see any files.Hope all you guys can try it on your computers and tell me if it works for you and how you got it to work. Good Luck!!

The driver is for the pocketech portable and external usb 2.0 HD. The notes in the DOS section clearly state the problem, and it is due to memory addressing conflict in some systems. They are working to solve the problem. If you are using the driver with a different companies product, then you really don't have room to gripe. Otherwise, take up the issue with the manufacturer.

Gripe??? Gosh Thanks for stating the obvious! This is my first post on this forum and I hope others are a little more constructive than you.
Maybe I should clarify some things for you,
I was doing somersaults that somebody, anybody had released a dos driver for an external USB hard drive, esp one that looks generic and clearly states that its for USB zips CDROMs and hardrives.
Clearly I dont expect support from the manufacturer hence the reason why I posted here for others to try this driver and to get adivce from the "community" on how best to run it on my systems.
So if you would actually like to TRY these drivers or help me to understand what the dos command options mean and how to use them, then I would LOVE to hear from you.
Wow Harpie! Good find! That driver worked for my USB CD-RW in DOS! You don't know how happy that makes me! As for your drive enclosure, I'm not sure why it's not working.
This is what I did to get it working:
I created a directory on my hard drive called USBDOS and extracted the driver files to that directory. Next I changed to that directory and typed this command:
duseldr c:\usbdos\duse.exeIt then scanned my USB bus and found my CD ROM. Next I typed:
MSCDEX /D:USBCDROM /S /M:15 /V
And MSCDEX assigned a drive letter to my CD and I was able to read from it! Awesome! You shouldn't need the second step because you're not using a CD ROM. Try that and see what happens. Thanks again for finding it. I'm going to add it to my USB section today!
Good luck!

Oh wow thats great!!! You're the first person I know of to get DOS and USB going with an external drive. Just makes me feel happy that this has happened coz I believe it wont be long till other drivers are released and eventually one will work for mine(hopefully)
I tried what you suggested already and no luck. Now just hoping someone else with an external hard drive can get it to work.By the way, can the cd writing function work in dos eg with norton ghost. This would be something a lot of people want. To be able to ghost a drive without needing another partition.
Harpie,
Because CDs use completely different file systems when compared to hard drives, I don't think Ghost could write directly to a CD. You'd have to have some sort of TSR running that would emulate a hard drive filesystem for the CD. If such a program existed, I think Ghost could write images to it just as easily as it could write to any mass storage device. Maybe norton should write this TSR themselves. It would certainly extend the functionality of Ghost.
Just my $.02

I believe the latest version does write to IDE cd writers in dos, I just thought that it may also work for yours as you now have dos drivers.
Doing research on getting a laptop (dos) and noway to get an os on it...
(cept cd usb)I tried the drivers you guys listed, but the DUSE driver said no controller found.
My question is, what version of dos are you running???
Thanks if you can tell me....
I follwed the procedure....it almost worked...had a ME boot floppy, said it was the wrong DOS version. Tried a 98se boot floppy, and it also won't load the driver....
Waiting to hear back....
thanks,
JIM
I was using DOS 7.10 bootdisk from Windows 98 SE. What program actually gave you the incorrect version message? It should work on a 98 bootdisk, I'm not sure what the problem is.
Harpie, what version of Ghost can write to CDs? I think I don't have the latest... Mine is version 6 something.

I am sure it will work, The suppport site says you just need dos drivers and hopefully a compatible cd writer
I have Norton Ghost 2002. It installs in Windows, but the DOS floppy you make in this application says it will copy to a CD-R. I have never tried to use this function however.
I've tryed the driver found on
http://www.pocketech.net/
in the DOWNLOAD section and ghost 6.1.
It works well with my USB hard drive.

antonio....would you mind telling me which usb hard-drive you have, so that I may avoid conflict before I start. I'm setting up a system for back-up, was considering usb hard-drive, but was wondering about dos and what program would be best. I was thinking ghost but didn't know if it would do it. Apparently it can, so the only info I need now is what drive is compatible..ie, yours. :) thanx.
i've an external case "Travel HDD Usb" by CROWN ACCESSORIES. Inside it, I've put an IBM hd 3,5'' 10GB. I don't think the model of the HD is significative, but I've not tryed another one.

If you got the usb hard drive to work, what are your commands you have in the auto and config?
Thanks
