Comment: I want to wipe my computer completely so that I can install from scratch. I formatted my hard disk using DOS but Windows 98 SE remains on the system but the startup stops at the command line C:\>. How can I completely remove windows from my system?

Reply: (edit)A successful format erases everything on the partition selected - unless you chose the 'system' option (format c: /s) which installs the system (boot) files from the bootdisk. Seems to be what you did. Shouldn't be a problem, but if you can explain why it is, suggestions may be forthcoming. Reply: (edit)I didn't FDISK before formatting but I did choose the 'system' option. So what you are saying is that I should completely format the drive? The reason this is a problem is because there seems to be a problem with reading info off my windows 98 book floppy and my windows xp cd isn't recognised.

Reply: (edit)Not saying anything like that at all Why did you choose the system option? It's done what you've selected and installed the system files. "there seems to be a problem with reading info off my windows 98 book floppy and my windows xp cd isn't recognised." Maybe if you could clearly state what you are actually trying to accomplish - install 98? XP? what?? I suspect whatever that may be, you're doing it the hard way. Reply: (edit)I want to install windows xp completely from scratch. I tried installing over 98 but it ran very slowly and most of my programs didn't work. I was told that this could be because I installed over another OS. I then reverted back to 98 and looked up how to format the c drive and must have misunderstood the instructions. Now I can't format the C drive at all. To answer a previous question, I think my system is FAT32, if that helps. Sorry if i'm not making myself clear.

Reply: (edit)Ok - well you are doing things the long way around. You install XP by booting from the CD, if this is supported on your machine - and if it isn't, probably neither is XP. You likely need to change the boot order from the CMOS setup so that the CD drive is the first boot device. After that, you're on your own - although further inquiries could be better addressed in the XP forum. Have fun & good luck Those people that think they know everything are a great annoyance to those of us who do

Reply: (edit)I noticed that boot order earlier but didn't change it. Dos recognised the xp cd right away and setup went fine. Thanks very much.

Reply: (edit)Actually, there is no DOS, the CD was recognized by the computer BIOS (M$ has abandoned their creation) Glad it all worked out. Those people that think they know everything are a great annoyance to those of us who do
