I have a full version of Dos 6.22 I need to use for college work but have been told it is not possible to load with Win95 already installed, is it possible to get round this or do need to wipe Win95 off first, load Dos then Win95.
thanks

DOS 6.22 is already on most win95 machines. Just boot up to DOS to do anything you need to. If you need a certain utility off the disk, use expand to extract it to your harddrive. And in asnwer to your question, you have several problems trying to install dos 6.22 on a windows machine. If you have any fat32 partitions (any partitions larger than 2 gigs) dos 6.22 is not be able to read them. There are other ways of running DOS 6.22 without installing it. If you want more help let me know.

Hi,
Yes you can overcome this problem but you will need some manual work for this. First of all its only possible if your hard drive has FAT16 file system. If you already convert to FAT32 you can't install DOS 6.22 on it.
To install DOS 6.22 on Win95 computer I can suggest 2 methods:
Method I:
1. Install DOS 6.22 on some other computer and configure Autoexec.bat and Config.sys files as you need.
2. Copy DOS directory from that computer on your Win95 computer.
3. Copy Io.sys, Msdos.sys, Command.com, Autoexec.bat, and Config.sys files on diskette and rename them to Io.dos, Msdos.dos, Command.dos, Autoexec.dos, and Config.dos respectively.
4. Copy mentioned above renamed files to the root directory of C:\ drive of your Win95 computer.
5. To the [Options] section of Msdos.sys file add the line BootMulti=1.Now you will be able to boot into DOS 6.22 pressing F4 key while Starting Windows 95 message is displaying (or pressing F8 and selecting Previous DOS version from menu).
Method II:
1. Create boot diskette on your Win95 computer. Make sure you have SYS.COM file on this boot diskette (you can get it from C:\Windows\Command directory.
2. Save Msdos.sys, Autoexec.bat, and Config.sys files from C:\ drive in some temporary directory.
3. Install DOS 6.22 on your Win95 computer and configure Autoexec.bat and Config.sys files as you need.
4. Rename Io.sys, Msdos.sys, Command.com, Autoexec.bat, and Config.sys files on C:\ drive to Io.dos, Msdos.dos, Command.dos, Autoexec.dos, and Config.dos respectively.
5. Boot from Win95 boot disk created on Step 1 and use SYS C: command to restore Win95 startup files.
6. Copy Msdos.sys, Autoexec.bat, and Config.sys files saved on Step 2 from
temporary directory back to the root of C:\ drive.
7. To the [Options] section of Msdos.sys file add the line BootMulti=1.Now you will be able to boot in DOS 6.22 ethier with F4 or with F8 key as mentioned above.
CAUTION!!!
Do not try to boot into DOS 6.22 if you have Win95B (OSR2) version. This version has a bug in boot sector causing computer to hang up after booting into Previous DOS. If you have Win95B you need to patch boot sector before using DOS 6.22. If you need such patch I can send it to you.Good luck, Igor M

if you are going to run DOS 6.2 it is best just to use a separate computer dedicated for this purpose. Don't try to foul things up and mix Dos 6.2 with win 95.
If you want strict DOS flavour then run Dos 6.2 on one machine and windows on another machine and forget about it.
Compare IO.sys of windows 95 with IO.sys of Dos 6.2. big difference!
