I'm unable to install dos 6.22 over the dos 5.0 thats allready in there. This laptop is old and has only 42MB with 655360 RAM. All I want is to put any windows on this computer, so that I can access the internet. and I know that dos 5.0 that I have now will not do that, so is there any way to override dos 5.0 with dos 6.22?

Older versions of dos need the boot up files installed in a sequential order so it would be best to format and then install. I think you need 4mb of extended memory and 10 times the disk space to run windows 3.1 and windows explorer.Use Mem at the dos prompt to see what extra mem you have and make a note of your start up files and how the memory manager is configered. Your internet service provider often will provide the software you need after 3.1 is installed. Is this a IBM laptop?

This is a Zenith supersport sx laptop. I tried typing MEM at the dos prompt and it says "Bad command or file name". How do I get more memory and also see how much memory is in this computer? Tell me how to install boot up files in sequential order.
Thanks,
Jennifer

See if mem.com or mem.exe are in the dos directory. if so and that directory is current typing mem should start the program. Another program to look for is MSD. I saw the stuff about the order of the files in the knowlage base at the microsoft site. The install program should do it I'd hate to do it manually.

I tried typing mem.com and mem.exe and it still just says "Bad command or file name". But when I had tried to download ms-dos 6.22, it said "Disk is full" I dont know if it means that the hard drive disk is to full to add more or what.
Thanks,
Jennifer

I was able to get the MSD program and it told me that the computer's memory is 640k and the computer is a 80386.
Does that mean that there is not enough memory to even install the 6.22 version of dos, or any windows to this computer?
Thanks,
Jennifer

Check to see if Himem.system is loading at start up. When the "starting ms dos" apears at startup hit f8 and choose step by step. You need this program to be loaded to use the EMS (extra memory above 640k) On my laptop the computer counts through the extra memory before starting ms dos. It counts up to 4000k , I have 4 meg extra mem

When I turn the computer on, Word Perfect 5.1 comes on (which I dont want) and I have to hit enter to go to the dos prompt, which is C:\WP51\DATA> It does not show the Himem.system at all.
Thanks,
Jennifer

To restart the computer use ctrl -alt- del three keys at once. Then it will do the self test of the mem and you can hit f8. when himem loads it will display testing upper memory....done. When you get to the c:>prompt you can run mem. It wont run from a c:\wp\data\ prompt. typeing cd \will always take you to the root c:> You need a min of 2000k to run windows

If you have an existing version of DOS, then sometimes you need to install the DOS "Upgrade" instead of the normal version.
