I replaced my old hard drive with a new 6.4g. I installed a BIOS flash upgrade, partitioned the new hard drive, formatted it, booted with DOS 6.22 Disk #1 and installed O/S. Upgraded to Windows 3.1 and everything seemed to be okay until I shutdown the computer. When I turned it back on I got the error message "non system disk or disk error, replace and press any key when ready". Can you tell me whats up?

Also, I know that it's runs FAT16 so I had to create the active partition C: (2.1g) and other logic drives for the balance. When I install my Windows98 upgrade will this allow me to combine all partitions into C:.

Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Sheree'

Hi,

Try to boot with DOS 6.22 Disk #1 again and use SYS C: command to restore system files.
As for combining all partitions in one - Win98 can't do it. It can just convert FAT16 to FAT32, but can't combine partitions. To do that try PartitionMagic program by PowerQuest instead.

Good luck, Igor M

Hi Igor,

Thanks for responding! I have tried to use the sys command to restore the system files and when I rebooted it gave the same error message. I switched to the "c" drive and used the DIR /AH command to see if the system files transfered. I saw IO.SYS, MSDOS.SYS and oops, I forgot the third file. (sorry)

What do you think? Am I missing something, skipping a step? Or is it possible that this new hard drive is bad? This is getting really frustrating.

If you or anyone else has any suggestions I would be grateful!

Hope to hear from you!!

Thanks again,

Sheree'

Sounds like you do NOT have Large Disk Support for > 2 gig drive. Enable this feature in fdisk and make sure your BIOS is also enable for LB.
