For a DOS / Windows 3.x they are not required. However, they are also not utilised as the default is PIO 4. There is a very sneaky way to get actual ATA-33 support (UDMA-2) in DOS and Windows 3.x, but it requires that you have a CDROM or CD-RW from one of two manufactures: Artec or Lite-on. The DOS CD drivers for both of these makers have a /UDMA switch which allows ATA-33 transfer rates from their CDROM/CD-RWs in DOS, as a bonus it also activates the entire IDE chipset so all drives run at ATA-33 if they are capable. WhooHoo! For DOS/Win3x it's almost over-kill and all you will ever need.

The Drivers come on a floppy with the drives or you can download them from the Artec or Lite-on web sites. You can only use the drivers with CDROMS/CD-RWs from those two munufactures they won't work with just any CD drive.
