Subject: Turn off the PC speaker under DOS
Comment:

I have always wanted to know whether the pc internal speaker can be turned off via software because sometimes it's a little bit annoying, either under DOS and Windows. I know it's handled by the port 61h together with the 42h and 43h 8253 ports, but how can you avoid programs turn it on in runtime?

The PC speaker can tend to get VERY annoying with some programs - mainly, DOS games that insist on having music using the PC speaker and don't let you turn it off.

I once found a program called SHUTUP that claimed to do this (If you want, I can get if off of a local BBS, where I know it resides) but I tried it with some programs and it didn't do much... then again those programs might just have been weird.

If you can't find software to do it, all I can suggest is to set up a simple switch that hooks into one of the wires of the PC speaker. Or you could splice the wires into your speakers and use the volume controls present in them... assuming of course that you have a sound card and speakers with volume controls.

ASHLEY4, I would be thankful if you could just tell me the main ideas of what this program should do, unless it is really complicated; I'm able to write simple assembler sources, and simple TSR programs.
