God please someone help me before I am forced to take a sledge hammer to my new computer! PLEASE!

I figured out how to get to DOS on this computer which has no operating system on it. Then tried to install windows by running setup.exe. It told me setup cannot create files on your startup drive and cannot set up windows 98. if you have hpfs or ntfs, you must create an ms-dos boot partition . if you have lantastic server or superstor compression, diosable it before running setup. see setup.txt on setup disk 1 or the windows 98 compact disc.

So I figured out to do the fdisk and created a primary partition, or so I thought. Well now several hours later and several partitions deleted, activated, and the like when i run setup.exe from my d drive with the disk in it i get a cannot create temporary directory. if you have hpfs or ntfs installed on your hard drive, you will need to create an MS-DOS boot partition to set up windows and then it goes back to the D prompt.

Lord please someone save me from this hell!

Sounds like you may not be rebooting (required to write the partition info to the disk) or formatting (required after partitioning) before running setup.
Try the following:

Obtain a bootdisk for 98

download Ranish partition Maneger from http://www.freedos.org/freedos/software/lsmtable.cgi?dir=util

put ranish(part.exe) on the bootdisk reboot and using ranish delete all partitions

reboot again and using fdisk create a partition making it active

reboot (this is essential) again format c: drive then run install

I wish I knew where people get the idea that they have to "install dos" before they install windows. DO NOT repeat DO NOT use old versions of DOS, and old versions of FDISK and FORMAT to prepare to install Winshaft 98. USE THE DISKS AND MATERIALS that came with it. Most 98 cd's have a folder/file somewhere on it that's called "fat32ebd" which when run from a dos prompt will GENERATE a W98 bootable disc. Or, go the bootdisk.com or even Microshaft and download a WINDOWS 98 boot disc.

DO NOT repeat DO NOT screw around with old DOS versions. Use 98 versions, and use the late FDISK and FORMAT that CAME WITH 98. If you have a "full version" of 98, this should all be on the CD. I'm not sure about some or all of the "upgrade" versions, they may not have format.com on there.
