Hello, I'm trying to install Windows 98 (so i can do an HP upgrade), but my 3.5 disk drive doesn't work (& b4 you ask why i don't just get a new one, I've already spent enuff $$ on a new extra hard-drive, & I never use a disk drive). I can get into BIOS, & the C: drive is already formatted. I tried changing the bootup order have put the cd-rom 1st (under boot) & disabled the 3.5 disk drive, but i'm still getting a black screen & a stupid "invalid system disk, replace disk & press any key" error, & i don't hear the cd-rom spinning or anything. What gives, anyone know? There's also the order on the main window with disk drive (disabled), primary drive, primary slave drive, & then the cdr & dvd player are listed afterwards. Do i need to put the 1st CD drive above the disk drive & primary drive? if so, HOW do i do it in the MAIN window? it's already listed first in the BOOT window. Please help!

Why on earth you would ask this here instead of in the Windows 98 forum is beyond me, but know this:

Not all Windows 98 CD's are bootable.

There is some arguement as to whether the RETAIL (store bought-boxed) "full" versions will boot or not. NONE of the several copies I have will boot, and all are legitimate Mikaroshafting copies.

apparrently ALL "OEM" copies will boot.

NONE of the "upgrade" disks will boot.

Why is it that you can't afford a few dollars for a floppy, or maybe, don't you have a second machine that you can borrow the drive for a few minutes?

How about this? How do you know it is "bad?" Maybe blow out the dust? Check the cable hookup? Check the bios settings?

That is so true, and I just loathe the "experts" who post that all Win98 CD's are bootable. NOT THE CASE AT ALL!

You can avoid many of these Windows problems with Linux. Linspire eases the transition for new users

It remains to be seen if your CD is bootable, but if the CD drive is not spinning up, that would seem to be the problem.

If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.

Suppose I have a nice house. I spent a lot of money on it. Because of all the money I spent I refuse to buy insurance. After all, I've never had any use for it. Am I an idiot?

Jeez, just plop down $20 and buy a floppy drive. At least you'll have it if you need it. Never say never.
