Comment: I edited my autoexec.bat and config.sys files to try and get a cd-rom to work. Now whenever I start my computer it never gets past the startup screen. Should I just reinstall ms-dos 7.10 to erase what I did?

Reply: (edit)So, you mean it did work right after you installed MS-DOS 7.10, but doesn't work any more after you modify CONFIG.SYS & AUTOEXEC.BAT, right? Therefore, the key is: what changes you have done to the system files?! Why not press F8 key to see which CD-ROM driver halts there before loading CONFIG.SYS & AUTOEXEC.BAT?

Reply: (edit)You are responsible for the changes you made to the DOS system configuration files yourself. If you load the wrong driver in CONFIG.SYS & AUTOEXEC.BAT, then it could cause the system not to start, no matter what DOS version. In this case, the F5 or F8 key will help, so that you can boot to the DOS prompt and restore the changes manually. By the way, if you want to disable/enable the DOS startup screen, then why not read the following thread? http://www.computing.net/dos/wwwboard/forum/14261.html

Reply: (edit)The moral of this story is - Always backup your Autoexec.Bat & Config.Sys files BEFORE you try to modify them! That way you can always restore DOS to how it was!! Or at least print a copy for referance..

Reply: (edit)"...see which CD-ROM driver halts there before loading CONFIG.SYS & AUTOEXEC.BAT?" So how exactly do I do this? The message I see when I press esc out of the start up screen are... IDE/ATAPI CD-ROM Device Driver Version 2.14 Error: No CD-ROM Drives detected at all Error: Device driver aborts loading

Reply: (edit)hq, Have you even read the following Knowledge Base Article for systems with no CD-ROM at all: http://newdos.yginfo.net/msdos71/doskbc6.htm If not, please read it carefully! If you mess up your system configuration files while editing them, then that's your fault. Mick C is totally correct. Besides backup your files, you should also know/learn some useful hotkeys for DOS startup before you modify your CONFIG.SYS & AUTOEXEC.BAT: F4: Boots directly into the older version of DOS, if you have anwsered YES to the dual-boot when you installed MS-DOS 7.10. F5: Totally bypasses your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files. F8: Activates the boot menu screen. If you press F8 key during DOS startup, a boot menu with many useful options will appear!! Shift+F8: Enable "Step-by-step" startup mode. Processes your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files one line at a time, asking for confirmation before executing each line. Useful for troubleshooting of CONFIG.SYS & AUTOEXEC.BAT. Some of the above hotkeys are only available for MS-DOS 7.0/7.10, not for older versions of DOS.

Reply: (edit)So the only way to get my autoexec.bat and config.sys files back to the way they where is to go in there an manually undo the changes I made? And yes I'm sure I have the right drivers.

Reply: (edit)"I'm sure I have the right drivers." What "right" drivers do you have? What're the file names of them? For that type of CD drive? IDE? SCSI? USB?

Reply: (edit)I have downloaded that ZIP package (EFX29.ZIP), unzip the CD driver (CDROM.SYS), and inserted a line to CONFIG.SYS as follows: DEVICEHIGH=CDROM.SYS /D:IDE-CD And it works just fine! Here is a screenshot to show this: http://newdos.yginfo.net/pic/doscddrv.jpg So, how did you modify the DOS system configuration files (CONFIG.SYS & AUTOEXEC.BAT)? My suggestion is just changing the line from: "DEVICEHIGH=<path>VIDE-CDD.SYS /D:IDE-CD" to: "DEVICEHIGH=<path>CDROM.SYS /D:IDE-CD" If it still doesn't work, then please check if there is any virus or hardware problems on your system!

Reply: (edit)I have just added a new dialog box with the following messages to the installer for CD drives: "Most people have at least one IDE CD-ROM/RW or DVD-ROM/RW drive on their systems. To access a CD/DVD drive, the corresponding CD/DVD driver and the CD/DVD extension (i.e. MSCDEX.EXE) must be loaded. If you wish, MS-DOS 7.10 will load a generic IDE/ATAPI CD/DVD driver for CD/DVD drives and MSCDEX.EXE when DOS starts. If you have another type of CD/DVD drive (e.g. SCSI or USB CD), then you may need to load a different CD/DVD driver in CONFIG.SYS and/or AUTOEXEC.BAT to make that CD/DVD drive work correctly. Do you want MS-DOS 7.10 to load a generic IDE CD/DVD driver and the CD/DVD extension (MSCDEX.EXE) automatically when DOS starts? [ Load both ] [ Load IDE CD/DVD driver only ] [ Don't load ]"

Reply: (edit)I went back and redid everything because I did not remember exactly what I changed in my autoexec.bat and config.sys files. To skip the startup problem I pressed F5. This allowed me to get to a prompt. This time after installing MS-DOS 7.10 again I followed Wengier's advice and inserted just the one line. DEVICEHIGH=CDROM.SYS /D:IDE-CD After saving and restarting, everything worked out. If I had written down what the autoexec.bat and config.sys files where before I changed them this might have saved me alot of time.

Reply: (edit)I forgot to meantion in my previous post that I used the manufactor's driver. Fortunately they still had one for DOS. After installing the driver I added the line into the config.sys file.
