I notice your Christmas message has been deleted. Good Thank you for your kind remarks re PowerLoad in your last posting, However it will not make a friend of me. I beleave you are doing harm with your multiple listings of download sites, than you think. As you may be aware I used to run one. It was in fact closed down by SpacePorts not Microsoft or any other organisation! The other users complained about exsesive use of bandwidith. This was not helped by Kewlone who linked to my page (along with others) to save themselves the effort. And that is why I stopped even trying to help people locate DOS or Windows, They want you to do all the work with little or no thanks in return. I say to anyone who wants to locate a download site. try harder yourself, Why leave it to just a few people to do all the running for you. I notice the same names here posting all the help, time after time, (And I do not include myself here) I know they enjoy it, or they would not bother, very few problem posters come back to say if it worked or whatever. As for your links lists, you are damaging the prospects of the very people you think you are helping, let them find the links, they are all here in dozens of posts or on search pages if they even bother to look.

To all the other helpers here on Computing.Net
Thank you for your Hard work

Do not put yourself down Mick C you have given good advice both here and on your powerload pages, which are among the best on the web as far as MS-DOS and Windows 3.1 goes, and your timeline page is in a class of its own. So I add you to your own thank you list.

Finding these pages or harder than you think (if it is a rare piece of software). Not saying I agree with happy helpers theory, but if someone needs a piece of software, & I know where it can be found, I dont mind e-mailing them the link. I dont believe in posting links in public forums.

I dont agree with you Mick C. one bit. Not all of us are lazy! I am 55 yrs old and was given an old Pentium 90 from my son six months ago running dos/Win 3.1. I have to looked for old programs to run on my machine. When I type it in a search engine it gives me info about the program but NOT a download site. Maybe it is a certain way to word it so download sites will come up. I dont know, I am still learning. But quit assuming everyone is lazy.

Oh my God, you mean that there *are* people out there that don't fit into the lazy category *or* the knowledgeable category? Holy crap! And here I thought stereotyping was 100% fool proof. No sh-t there are people out there that are not lazy but still don't know how to find these sites. We are talking about the other 99% of the people who ask for DOS. Get over it, Grand Pa. Yes, it is how you word it though. The way you do a good search on the net is to use the most descriptive term possible without typing too much. So if you were looking for where to buy cat chow, a good search would probably be...

+"cat chow" +"buy"

...which means to find every site with the phrase "cat chow" (hence the quotes - so that it's taken as a phrase versus two seperate words) and then it searches through those sites for the word "buy". The +'s tie the two together. Here are the results of my search on Google.

You cannot please all of the poeple all of the time. Take a look at my PowerLoad Resource Pages where I try to help DOS & Windows 3x users with the basics. (A few utilities, but no full programs) As DoOMsdAY says we are not trying to slot you into a category, and the first message is aimed at Happy Helper who knows full well what I am talking about.

1. The best place to get DOS software is in the newsgroups. DOS, Win3x, games, apps, and utilities are constantly being posted and re-posted. It's a wonderful resource. Get Free Agent and configure it to work with your ISP. Then load all the newsgroups from your server and use the "find" command to look for "PC" or "Win3" newsgroups.

2. Everyone knows any DOS/Win3 downloading site will eventually be closed so I really don't have a problem with Happy Helper posting links. However, I feel he shouldn't post a link unless the owner of the site says it's OK.

3. Mick C is right. Hardly anyone offers thanks if you try to help out. It's really amazing how thoughtless people are. I'm asked for advice a lot and hardly anyone writes back to tell me whether my advice worked or to tell me I suck.

I agree with Preston. I know of some sites that were never posted in these forums that have gotton shut down. Like Preston said, the makers of these sites know there site wont be up forever. Besides, as soon as one is shut down, more ALWAYS pop up. Newsgroups are a great place for dos/windows old software. All dos versions are posted at one time or another & all Windows versions. The only one I have yet to see is WinME & give it time, they will post it also.

The main thing I objected to was Happy Helpers MULTIPLE LISTING of Links when they are not even asked for. Now thats over exposure! I only made this post becouse HH asked me what I think. When I removed the links to my own os download site. I recieved abusive e-mail calling me all the names under the sun, as if it was my fault other sites had linked to mine without even asking, saying MS-DOS 6.22 or Windows 3.1 is available on it. Some of these links are still active. As to a person giving his or her own link, or other that is OK with the owner, I have no problem with that.

What people have to ask themselves is, What type of site is Computing.Net? And what are its aims?

Merry Christmas to all.

An Btw - I was the one who started removing happy helpers postings.

Laziness, stupidity and ineptness are things I don't tolerate.
Besides, it's hard enuff to get older software without passing addresses direct to the BSA. There are still sites around but M$ - who have most say with BSA policies - are slowly shutting them down.

Also, of the sites that nerdbrain posted, half of them had broken links and the other half had duplicated software.

So much for the checking . . . . .

Happy Helper thanks for being such a good sport out of all the terrible things people have been saying about you. Out of all the criticism you have received you have kept your cool, remained calm, & have not insulted anyone, never used profanity, (which just shows how ignorant people are) as others have done in this thread. You ARE one of the best. Your character & personality speaks for itself. Some people here need to take after you.

Merry Christmas!

If all you Happy Helper haters just sit back & think for just one minute, all he was trying to do was help people get older software for there machines. Now, he might not have gone about it the best way, but all he was trying to do was help people out. I think he really is a good person & better than some of you who posted here, Jon Fox, ect, who love to critisize people. And to Doomsday, when Jon Fox down grades peoples intelligence, I see you had nothing to say to him, but to Chris you had something negative to say about his post & his was not as bad as Jon Fox. Maybe it's because you too are budies. Whatever the case I do not care, but people lay off Happy Helper. He said he was going to stop, so give him a break, everyone makes mistakes including some of you know it alls.

Jon Fox helps people on here quite often so I lay off of him. I stopped harassing Happy Helper a long time ago in the post that was later deleted. He saw the point of view I was trying to give him, and responded accordingly. If Chris actually helped people instead of using just using this opportunity to insult someone, I would treat him just as I did Jon Fox. It's sort of like a group of people having a meeting, then someone who has nothing to do with the topic at hand barging in and insulting one of the meeting members. This was between the regular helpers on here and the WWWBoard admin (Justin Weber.) Also, had Chris actually stated some sort of worthwhile opinion (ie. that people expect the sites to be shut down anyway) I would also have been just as lenient as this is an open forum and everyone can have their say. As it turns out, none of the above is true and all Chris was doing was wasting space on Justin's server with his insult. I try not to get profane if I can help it, but some people are just a--holes and need to be put in their place. As far as I am concerned, the proposed solution by Happy Helper sounds fine to me. It's not 100% fool proof as the person's site he links to could have never even have heard of www.computing.net and thus will not see that their site it being linked to, but far better than the randomly posted long lists. The best way we'd decided on as far as I am concerned is to e-mail the people in question the links. This of course exposes your e-mail address, though. Anyway, this was sposed to be an open forum with thoughtful answers, Chris violated that and I insulted him...that's all.

Doomsday your response makes no sense. Jon Fox gave some bad insults, regardless if he helps people on here or not. No one insulted him or you. An insult is an insult. Then you get pissed when someone shoots it back to him. Who the hell was talking to you? You have nothing to do with it. No one was talking to you so keep your nose out of others business or go find your own. You both have serious problems & love to insult & disrespect people. Like Janet said, you all need to take lesson on manners from Happy Helper.

I love to insult and disrepect people who do the same to others, yes. I have not once insulted anyone due to lack of knowledge on a subject or for asking "stupid" questions, etc. The only time I harass anyone at all is when they are disrespectful to someone else. I have attacked regular posters the same as I do people who just venture out for an insult. I just try and show more respect for those who do help others on a regular basis because it is a very thankless job. 99% of the answers I provide never get even a status report on whether it worked or not. The questions keep coming and eventually stop, at which point I assume it's been solved. So when someone insults one of the people who work very hard at providing answers, I find that insulting. Even if it's not aimed at me. I went back and read what Jon wrote and saw your point, though (and the point of a couple of others.) I'd never read it to a point of taking it as insulting (probably from skimming text) - but after re-reading just saw where he says anyone who doesn't believe as he does is a fool. I tend to agree with him on his statement that the majority of the people are as he says, but his saying anyone who believes different from him is a fool I do not agree with. As I've said numerous times in this post alone, everyone is welcome to their opinions. Just because they don't agree with mine doesn't make that person anything. (Even you are welcome to your "fruitcup" theory, as you called it Tootsie.) The reason for my lashing out at Chris, however, is that he posted in here an insult, then in another post an insult and finally (I am guessing) another insult posing as W0rm. As you can see above, I didn't attack Janet or Johnathan because they didn't cross that same line Chris did for me. Anyway, that's my reasoning on things. Feel and believe whatever you want.

I came here because I needed help with a problem, and I resolved the problem. It may have been a stupid question to some, but hey, we all gotta learn somewhere! I appreciated the help, and I came back and posted a "Thank You". If you've never seen one (a thank you, that is), it's post # 4702. Nope, there are people who actually do give an update or a thanks for the help, and as is the reason for many other things in life, those are the ones that make it worth the time and effort put forth. I for one don't ever really expect a thank you, but it's really great when you do get one. Another thing is that often people come back much later to their post and see a reply to their question, posting a thank you or more questions or whatever then - which I know I stop checking once they age so much and I'm sure others do as well. So the ratio for thank you's versus nothing is probably higher than most of us perceive now.
