Does anybody have the PC-DOS 6.1 file:
qbasic.ex_
The file i am having is causing the IBM DOS Editor not to work. it will sit at the command prompt. I replaced it with the MS-DOS 6.22 version and it worked. I would like to replace this file on my floppy diskette set.
thank you

I believe qbasic.ex_ is found on the installation disk and is the compressed qbasic.exe file. So it's not going to run from the dos prompt. You would use the dos EXTRACT command to extract it.

If that's not the problem and you just want the original file that came with PCdos 6.1 you might find it by googling something like qbasic "pc dos 6.1". However I couldn't find any downloads.

You could also check for a 6.1 bootdisk at places like bootdisk.com. It may have the qbasic version you're looking for.

Qbasic is one of the programs that's not OS specific (you're not getting the 'incorrect dos version' message) so why not just use the 6.22 version?

I found a PC dos 6.1 bootdisk image file here:

http://oldfiles.org.uk/powerload/bo...

but don't know if it has qbasic on it.

Is it possible you are simply mis-using the program?

(From memory) these basic interpreters had some unusual commands, e.g.

a) CNTRL + X.

b) when loading, QBASIC filename.ext

When they first appeared, they came with their own manual alongside that for the pc and ms-dos.

Good Luck - Keep us posted.

I copied the file qbasic.exe from OS/2 2.1 to the DOS directory and it worked properly. I would like to replace the bad file on the diskette that is giving me all sortsof grief. I think that the file is just corrupt. I downloaded a file that contained qbasic.ex_ but it was also corrupt. I am still confused about this. I have not used these disks in almost three years though. Just hope i can get my working set back together. and working properly. Like DAVEINCAPS said, it is not OS specific so if someone has a pcdos version of qbasic.exe in the unexpanded format (qbasic.ex_) it might help
thank you

I checked my dos 6.22 setup disks. In those qbasic was already in the expanded form--qbasic.exe. Probably because they wanted the EDIT command available and you need qbasic for that. The help file--qbasic.hlp--was compressed as qbasic.hl_.

It may work to just use qbasic.exe instead of the compressed version. Otherwise, I guess you need the opposite of the EXPAND command. There are a lot of ways to compress a file but in this particular case it would have to be compressed in a way that would allow it to be expanded with the EXPAND command.

I guessed that compression utility would be named COMPRESS.EXE and googled
dos expand.exe compress.exe. The first link:

http://oldfiles.org.uk/powerload/ms...

had a download for COMPRESS.EXE which almost certainly is the correct utility. I also verified that microsoft used a file by that name to compress the files.

So you can either try leaving qbasic in its expanded form on the disk or compress qbasic.exe and put it on the disk.

You're welcome. But with compress.exe you only need the PC-dos expanded version, which may make it easier to find.

QBASIC.EXE does not occur in PC-DOS 6.x or later. These use the IBM DOS E Editor, which uses E.EXE, E.EX, and EHELP.HLP.

If you want the IBM 5 Editor, you need to get hold of QBASIC and EDIT from pcdos 5, or from OS/2.

made a mistake. It must be the editor that is causing the problem for my me not to be able to edit anything. I copied the file over from pc dos 7 and it worked. Edit will work with dos 6.1
Classic problem of PLBKAC!!!!

We're glad you got it figured out. In response to os2fan2, I found the reference that qbasic wasn't included in those later versions but then found some file lists showing it. I thought maybe qbasic had been added in some OEM versions or the reference I found was in error. But either way, it was a file that came with your version.

Edit (QBasic and Win9x), DOS 6/7 interlnk/interserv, unpack2, rexx, qbasic, help, fasthelp, e, DOS 7 help (view.exe), gwbasic will work under all PC-DOS and MS-DOS. They do not come with all of these DOS versions.

rexx works under OS/2 as well, if the dosver is set to less than 10 (eg 8.00). dosver.rx will correctly give the DOS version as 20.46 or whatever.

You might note that the OEM versions of MS-DOS 6 are labeled MS-DOS and Enhanced Tools. Some OEMs, like IBM, did not buy the enhnaced tools.
