My computer keeps crashing when I open dos programs (epecially emulators). Either the programs display doesn't work or the system crashes completly. At first it was one program that that had been working perfectly. But over the last few weeks the problem has been getting worse. I tried using the windows trobleshooter but that couldn't fix the problems I've been having. I'm also having lots of Vxd errors. I resentlly reinstalled Windows 98. Could that be the cause of the problem? Maybe something didn't install properly. Should I try reinstalling windows again?

Windows device driver issues are a Windows question, please consult the Windows 9x Forum.

My problem IS the DOS programs Doofus. I just mentioned the Vxds because I wasn't sure if they were causing the problem.

You are opening the DOS programs from Windows, obviously, or the computer wouldn't be crashing. It seems most likely to be a driver issue. Probably a Windows Video Card driver. I'm not trying to brush you off, it's simply that the solution will be most likely found in the Windows 9x forum.

Mara456,

What you're actually doing is booting, momentarily, into real DOS; then running windoze; then running virtual DOS...THEN running an emulator atop of all that.

What a mess.

Why not at least run your emulator directly from real-mode DOS...omitting windoze altogether.

Emulators, especially, need direct access to hardware registers. Windoze freaks when virtual DOS attempts such.

At the very least, edit your msdos.sys to enable a more interactive startup.

I rebooted into MSDOS. Then when I tried to open one dos program it said:

Load error: no DPMI - get csdpmi*b.zip

Then I tried to open another one and the error I got was:

[PMODE/W]: Abort:00
Exception:00
Error code: 0019BD95

With a bunch of numbers and stuff under it. What is DPMI? Where do I get the file it was talking about? And what about the other error? What is it? How do I fix it? I really need help with this.

You need to install this, just like the message said: csdpmi3b.zip Here is some more info on DPMI: DPMI Table of Contents The second error is likely because the program needs DOS/4G or DOS/4GW. The requirement should be stated in the README file. A web search for the required DOS/4 file will lead you to a download.

I'll try out your first suggestion. However the program that gave the error:

[PMODE/W]: Abort:00
Exception:00
Error code: 0019BD95

Worked fine when I first got it. Why would it need that now?

PMODE/W is Protected Mode /W which indicates that DOS/4GW is not present or was unable to load. It could be that the first program locked the Extended memory DPMI handles causing DOS/4GW to fail loading. Try loading the second program again without loading the first program first. It could also be that you need to create a batch file that calls DOS/4GW and then the program. I strogly suggest you read the documentation that came with the program.
