Comment: Tried to sys the boot sectors from a Windows XP generated Fat floppy (which I think is actually the Windows ME Dos) to a 200 Gb Fat 32 USB Hard Drive. It comes up with "can only sys to drive c:", etc. My USB Drive is drive d: Any workaround possible? Thanks, Paul.

Reply: (edit)I've never seen that msg so it must be some XP/Me DOS wierdness. Try w98 DOS [7.1x]. ===================================== If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.M2

Reply: (edit)Hi Mechanix2Go, Thanks for that, I had thought of that. The only reason I was reticent to do this is because I considered the XP/ME Dos operating system might be a bit later and more compatible with large Fat 32 drives than the Windows 98se version (it has for example himem.sys built in as part of the boot code). But if I have no choice, so be it. Regards, Paul.

Reply: (edit)Try something called 'makeboot' from the site http://nu2.nu . You still need a boot diskette, but it will transfer boot sector to and from file, to any diskette or fixed disk. The dream you dream alone is only a dream, The dream we dream together is reality.

Reply: (edit)Hi All, Tried the Freedos sys.com and that does not like the Windows ME system. I tried to use it to boot from an Iomega Zip drive to ensure it would not trash my data, and it would not boot; after the initial "Freedos" information only garbage came up on the screen and machine locked up. I actually do all my backup and maintenace work from Dos, as Windows Xp is more a hindrance than a help here, and would love a good utility that would enable me to boot from my USB hard Drive into plain Dos rather than using a floppy disk to do so. By the way, the link given by os2fan2 does not provide access to Makeboot. Regards, Paul.

Reply: (edit)Well if you like doing things the hard way, then look for the MS-DOS version of the HP Utility, HP removed it from their website a few years ago, but you may find it on some obscure FTP site.. Linux would still be better than trying to patch together a **-DOS backup and deploy solution. Just a thought have you tried EDR-DOS which is basically DR-DOS 7.xx with enhancements: http://www.drdosprojects.de

Reply: (edit)I realize this comment's a bit late, but... > It comes up with "can only sys to drive c:", etc. DOS 8's SYS.COM was b---tardized by Microsoft. Type "SYS /?" in a command window and you'll see: "SYS C: C: Specifies the drive the files are to be copied to. Must be C:" Microsoft's version of "You can SYS any drive you want, as long as it's C:". DOS 8 won't even SYS a floppy.
