Sudden Monitor Problems

Help me out here. For I know nothing about monitors, video cards, etc. I turned on my computer & monitor yesterday and noticed on the left & right sides of the screen a sudden jerking movement. Even though I bought the monitor new in '96, it has never been left on continuously & always turned off when not in use. I have an old ega monitor on an old 286 that has worked for nine or ten years with no problems. I also notice at the bottom of the screen it kind of flickers also. Is it time for a new monitor, or can it be the video card or what. Again I know nothing about this sort of thing for I have never had this problem till now. It is a SVGA DAEWOO monitor.

Monitors aren't my field of expertice as they are cheap, last for many years, and are obsolete once they get old enough to go bad. This is easy enough to troubleshoot; simply plug the montior into another computer, if it works, the videocard is at fault, if not, relace the monitor. From what I've heard, sounds very strongly like the monitor is bad, but I suggest testing it before spending hundreds to replace it. There are specific problems that could be causing these symptoms, other than just 'the monitor is bad'. Perhaps the video cable is damaged internally, or the connector could be broken. Both are $5 fixes if know what you are doing.

I've had similar problems with my AcerView 78c where the sides ocassionally flickered. I waited for it to get real bad and noticable so it even blacked out at times. Then I brought it in under warrenty, it was 5 components that weren't the CRT itself. Try contacting a repair shop and getting an estimite than compare it with the price of a new monitor
