STRINGS.COM (a DOS utility published by PC MAGAZINE)worked fine in WIN95 and WIN98. Now I installed WIN2K, it does not work at all.
Does someone have a tip to make it work ? Or suggestion of an equivalent utility ?

Windows 2000 is an powerful OS and it doesnt use DOS. Windows 2000 and XP doesnt support DOS applications, if you are to run DOS applications and other operating systems you need (i.e. Connectix Virtual PC for Windows 2000 and XP).

Hope this helps.

To Wengier:
I used it in the following command:
STRINGS X=LENGTH ABCDEF
but when I enter ECHO %X% the system shows that X does not have any value. Did you add something in your CONFIG.NT and AUTOEXEC.NT ? Could it be an environment space problem ? Thanks

Oh,I know,it's an environment space problem.
STRINGS can't get the correct free space
of environment variables in Win2K.It's the
only problem I found with STRINGS in Win2K.

the ASK portion of strings (which i'd been looking for), at least is available in win2k:

In W2K it is easy, you can use set/p - type set/? to get the help and see below.
H:\>set/p fred=[input value for fred]
[input value for fred]oracleis?

H:\>echo %fred%
oracleis?

Hi !
Thanks for the tip.
But I also used other functions of STRINGS.COM such as LENGTH, LEFT, RIGHT etc... It seems that those functions and many others don't work with W2K.
