Subject: strange DOS files showing up and corrupting files
|
Comment: I'm getting strange files showing up on disk that have weird characters and end in ibm p .nci. It also will show a file called "and strike" - both have a size of 0. I reformat the disks, it disappears but then shows up again when I try to save the file to the a: drive. Usually 4 files then disappear off of the disk. The computer is running DOS 3.2. No one at work seems to know why this old computer is acting up! Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Reply: (edit)Thanks. Do you know any sites that have a virus scan for DOS 3.2? The actual computer we're running it on is a 286.

Reply: (edit)Here is a place that allows you to download a 30-day limited, full-featured version of their DOS anti-virus software. All you need is a bootable DOS disk with the software on in (the software may make it for you) from another system. Do not install this directly on the affected machine. Install it on another computer. Format any disks you use in the infected machine on a good computer, then write-protect them for use in the bad one. A DOS 6.22 disk should suffice, which can be downloaded here. Boot the infected machine with the DOS boot disk (that has the anti-virus software on it) and then run the virus scanner from that floppy. It doesn't necessarily have to run in DOS 3.2 (the anti-virus software) as you are booting up the machine with DOS 6.22 via the boot disk. I'm rambling horribly - I must be hungry. Off for lunch!
