Subject: Stange problem with XMSDSK OS: msdos 7.1 CPU/Ram: Intel Celeron 1.7GHz, 256
|
Comment: Hi. I try to load XMSDSK into a new machine: -PCCHIPS P4 FSB 533 motherboard -MS-DOS 7.10 -Intel Celeron 1.7GHz -256 MB ram But when I try to load XMSDSK from AUTOEXEC.BAT the system hang, and the most strange thing, this happens only with the floppy drive disconnected. If I connect this drive and later turn on the PC, the XMSDSK load fine from AUTOEXEC.BAT . Also, XMSDSK load fine too from CONFIG.SYS in both cases, with and without floppy drive. But and can't choose a drive letter, and the system hang if I try to unload. In other tested system ( ex. INTEL D850GB ) every works ok. Thanks Bedfford Arroyo Bravo. Chile.

Reply: (edit) Did you include a LASTDRIVE= statement in CONFIG.SYS? If you didn't, that's possibly the cause of these problems.

Reply: (edit)I already include this statement, and the problem persist. Now I discovery when I load XMSDSK from CONFIG.SYS, this kill the sound drivers of my SoundBlaster from AUTOEXEC.BAT ! And when I try to load XMSDSK from AUTOEXEC.BAT without the drive letter ( and no floppy drive ) , then XMSDSK load ok, but like drive A: and with only 1.4MB to use. If I add any drive letter, the system hang. :(

Reply: (edit)The help file for XMSDSK discusses placement of the drive. It can load high (/t) or low, maybe ... It also says that drive letter can only be chosen if from autoexec.bat. Sure of syntax ? xmsdsk 4096 W: /y /t /c4 with or without the /t .... Best

Reply: (edit)Why do you need xmsdsk?Ram disk? You indicate dos 7.1.Microsoft has a Windows ME dos boot disk to create a ram disk.In the config.sys the line reads: devicehigh=ramdrive.sys /E 2048 Good luck.

Reply: (edit)First, thanks for your help. About the parameters of XMSDISK, I try all of them and with the same bad result. I use XMSDSK a couple year ago with other system ( D850GB + P4 1.3GHz + Win98SE ) and never get problems. One reason for use XMSDSK is I read from several web sites, XMSDSK is the best, free and small program to create ramdisk into MSDOS & Win9x. Now, I thing here exist a problem of "compatibility" with XMSDSK and the motherboard PCChips and no solution. So I try to learn and test a replacement of XMSDSK with RAMDISK.SYS and see what happens. Thanks again for your comments and help ( and sorry for my poor english )
