I have a formatted 486Dx on which I have installed dos vers 7.22. This pc has 64M memory and I need to install soundblaster so that I can install cdrom and Win 95 have never done this type of thing before, but I am pretty certain it can be done just not sure what steps are proper. I have done several installs of win 95 and win 98, but never had to install hardware and drivers by myself Can anyone give me a few pointers?
I have the drivers for the soundblaster!

Well, if you have the drivers, it's pretty easy. Put them all togheter in the same directory (let's suppose that directory is C:\CREATIVE\AUDIO\DOSDRV)

Here's what you've got to do:
At your AUTOEXEC.BAT file, located at c:\, right the following lines:

SET BLASTER=A220 I7 D1 H7 P330 T6
SET SBPCI=C:\CREATIVE\AUDIO\DOSDRV

At the fisrt line, you shall put your soundblaster settings. After the "A" is the port, after the "I" is irq and "D" is dma. And of course, at the second line you should put the full path of the directory that your drivers are in, that one were only an example!
I think that should solve your problem. Note that any changes in autoexec.bat (and also in config.sys) only take effects after rebooting.
If that do not solve your problem, let me know (posting here a msg or even better, mailme) It would be good to have the maximum of information possible (such as the names of the files that you've got)

If for some reason you need the sound card's IDE / SCSI port, you'll need to initialize the card, the drive port, then the cdrom driver. Also, some 486 machines might not be able to handle certain dma channels. If you run into problems try

SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H1 P330 T6

If you are going to install win9x why did you install DOS?. Most win98 boot disks have CDrom support. So. if you want to end up with win9x. 1st boot your computer w/win98 boot disk, 2nd FDISK your Hard Drive. 3rd format your Hard Drive. finally insert your win9x cd in drive and install. win 9x will detect and install your cdrom and sound card
