I found a DOS program before to slow down the CDROm drive to 1x, 2x, 4x, 8x, 16x, and max. Anyone know what it's called?

If you are using a current CDROM (last two or three years) such throttling is totally unnecessary. I currently use an Artec 56x CDROM for my DOS machine, the driver adds DOS level UDMA support for the entire IDE chain -- woot! -- and I have never had a problem. Current drives use the RedBook specs to determine default disk speed based on the IDE chipset and the layout info on the CD.

why is it unnessesary? If a computer is being a file server and someone is playing MP3s off the CD, it is quite loud and they need less than 1x. I don't want the drive to overheat or wear out

Sorry about that, I thought you ment speed for compatability. I think the utility you want is CDSPEED It's not in fact a DOS utility, but rather a Windows Command line utility that is run from a DOS box in Windows.

Thanks a billion! That is exactly what I was looking for! I could find it anywhere. I think it may help that winfiles.com was converted to download.com which ditched DOS *grumble grumble* plus no one else wanted to help "why would you want the CD drive to go slower? Maybe you have a low quality drive if it's noisy, buy a new one"

Just reading the messages.....Reason I personally want to slow down my CDrom is because I have a dedicated mp3 player (PC) in living rom and the CDrom being a bloody SONY it sounds like a VACUM CLEANER - very noisy. It anoying. I won't buy anyhting SONY again. for mp3s.
