SBlive Dos with digital spearkers?

I'm trying to get DOS sound out of my SBlive card. I've set up all the drivers and configured the system so that the sound card does work. The problem is that I have a set of digital speakers and I get no output from them at the DOS level. If I connect analog speakers it works just fine.
Is there a special switch I need to add to enable the digital speakers in DOS. What am I missing? I know it used to work years ago when I first bought the card. The digital speakers work perfectly under windows.
