Hio,
Have had error messages recently about some windows files being replaced by other files. Insert xp cd it says...so i do...message goes away. Then it starts coming up several times a day, nothing fixes it.
Working on a project in llustrator...starts running like a dog. Crashes, reboots and then i get ye olde "pci.sys is missing or corrupted"
This would usually be easily fixed by expanding the file from the cd into the c:\windows\system32\drivers directory, but alas, i get access is denied. Stupid me had no idea when i built the thing that serial ata was detected last(or whatever), and so was installed as the last drive. I thought i could live with this, so i let it go.
I tried the recovery prog off the xp cd...the damn thing reads the hdd as c:\ and when i try to change into the windows directory, or do a dir, it tells me that it had problems with drive enumeration. When i try to copy or expand pci.sys to the drivers folder, it tells me access is denied. Im guessing this is because xp cd is looking for c:\ yet the drive is e:\ Im probably wrong, i dunno, but one thing is for sure, i dont know how to fix it...and before i go and download erd commander and "unlock" it, id really like to try and fix it the less evil way. ntfsdos doesnt even mount the drive because it doesnt seem to be able to find it. Anyone have any ideas? if i could just access the drive and copy pci.sys to it from a floppy...everything would be sweet...but the fact that its sata, ntfs and e:, seems to confuse programs. Please help, this is my work puter and i have to get some projects off it.

There is no DOS in XP and natively NTFS is no supported in pure DOS. This should be in XP forum NOT DOS Forum.

You boot XP from the CD and run install, at start you are requested to hit F6 if you have additional drive controllers, if you have copied the SATA drivers to floppy you can offer that and it will install the controller. Further into install it will recognise an existing Windows install and request if you wish to repair this? which you obviously do! that is the correct procedure.

yeah sorry, i know about the no dos in xp thing, but after being in front of a black screen and command prompts all day i kinda forgot.

When i installed the drive, i didnt load any drivers using f6 at the start(i have read about that though, afterwards), xp picked the drive up and installed fine. The drive seemed to be ok when the system was running and under load....does this mean it doesnt need the sata drivers installed at the start? When i went into installation today, all it picked up was the parition and said the whole drive was free except 1mb, so i cancelled in case it started to overwrite my data.

Do you know the best way to get the seagate sata drivers in separate file/s?...seagate use that disk wizard rubbish...im not sure of the installation procedure with this. all i want is the files and they make me download that program to do it.

If i have to use disc wizard, is it possible to load it when i press f6...or do i have to run it before i start xp setup. And if i have to run it before hand, will xp setup pick up the drivers discwizard installs? The disc wizard always wants to partition and format the drive, and i dont want to do that. Theres an option for "dynamic drive overlay" is this what i should be installing?

Sorry but i dont have a clue about installing sata drivers. I only got it 2 weeks ago. Thank you for your help...it would be great to have some more explainations

I presumed you were using the SATA drive as your main bootable drive. If you are not then installing the SATA drive as an additional drive later is OK.

If you read your ASUS manual it states that SATA support must be enabled in BIOS and the utility must be run to create a DAID ARRAY prior to installing an O/S. It would take me a long post to explain this, just follow the instructions.

Basically you initialise the SATA RAID, then make the floppy disk which is offered to XP on install by hitting F6.

I would ignore the SeaGate drive utility!

ok thanks for that, ill give it a go.

Seeing as the drive still worked without all this, does that mean before when it was sitting on the sata bus, it was running in ata133 mode or something? I thought if it was connected to the sata bus and it worked then it was working as sata. Or do you mean i have to configure it this way so it will become c: instead of e:?
Now all i have to do is find the sata drivers somewhere, all seagate seem to offer is that crap discwizard. If anyone knows where to get seagate sata drivers that would be sweet
thanks again

You do not need the seagate driver if you follow the instructions in the manual it will create a floppy disk with the files xp requires when hitting f6 at start of install.

the sata drive will be drive c:
