Hi. I'm using Windows XP on a laptop computer and I'm trying to run a very old DOS game. It works up to a point and then crashes with the message saying "Not enough memory!" By the way, I'm working on Windows XP and I've tried to run this game in an MS-DOS prompt. (So, if I should have posted this in Windows XP forum, sorry - my problem kind of encompasses both - XP and DOS) Anyway, read on...
As I recall, when I still used to have DOS and running this game, there was a trick I could do to somehow expand the memory, though I don't remember exactly what I had to do. If my recollection is good, there used to be some kind of program called emm386 or ems386 or ess386 (or something of the sort) which I ran and it made the game work. I'd like to know if this program can be found for download (for free if possible - I think it came with DOS...), where and if it is possible to run this program while running MS-DOS Prompt on Windows XP?
Thanks

The functions performed by Emm386.exe under plain DOS are now given directly from NTVDM under Windows XP (NTVDM is the DOS emulator for NT kernel systems). So what you ask has no meaning at all.
About your problem, stated that many DOS games do not work at all in a Win XP box, try the following:
Edit with NotePad the Autoexec.nt file (%systemRoot%System32) typing a Rem at the beginning of the line holding the DOSX command.
That may solve your trouble, if you are lucky, otherwise post again in Gaming or XP Forum.

"MS-DOS Prompt on Windows XP?"
Thats a new one on me, it is NT Command Prompt bugger all MSDOS in XP except under emulation.
This is a question of running software software in an Emulator and should be addressed in a different forum.
Please read the following so you will understand the emulation of DOS in NT4 which in essence is the same for NT5 and later:

Hey, Ivo. I did as you said in Autoexec.NT and it worked. Guess I was lucky. :)
I figured that my proposal might not make much sense in XP, but I didn't know how else to state my problem.
And rogerashley, thanks for the link. As I said, I may have had to post this in another forum, but in order to know that, I would have to have some general idea on how to solve this problem - whether I needed to change something in XP, or in DOS itself. I didn't know that.
Thanks a lot anyway.
