Why not just boot from the hard drive?

I hope that 'old motherboard' is at least 200mhz. You need that to play medium quality MP3s.

I can play 192Kbit MP3s on my P166 running Windows 98SE. A 486 DX2 can play MP3s, just as long as you aren't doing anything else.

I used to play MP3's on my old Pentium I 100mHz without any problems.

However, I'm wondering where he plans to store the MP3's without a hard drive.

Could he be wanting to boot from CD so he can also put his MP3's on there? Though he needs a MoBo which recognises Bootable Cd's

I think your soundcard driver and a small DOS mp3 player like Quickview, JukeMP3 or XTC-Player 0.97 will even fit on a bootable floppy! (together with your cd-rom driver).

Any DOS that can handle your drivers and programs will do.

This (small) content can also be burned on a bootable CD-rom but as I said a floppy has enough room....
