Comment:

I have a virus that won't allow me to access windows. I need to do a scan in dos, but the program is too big for floppys. Is there a way to burn the program to CD, and run it in DOS? or is there a better way that i am not thinking of.

I tried to switch directories to my d: this morining in dos, and it said it was a bad directory name or something.

any advice?
p.s. i'm very novice with computers as you can probably tell.

Thanks,
- John

download a generic dos cdrom driver (search google) put it in you windows dir.
in your config.sys type

devicehigh=c:\windows\******.sys /d:cdrom

replace ****** with the name of the driver
(be shure to unzip it if nessicary)

in your autoexec.bat add the line

c:\windows\mscdex /d:cdrom

(assuming that windows in installed in c:\windows)

note it might be
c:\windows\command\mscdex /d:cdrom
instead

type

d:

run the prog.

neotms88 you are wrong as he states and I quote:

"I have a virus that won't allow me to access windows."

john6969, if you have access to a windoze PC with Nero or EZCD burning software then yes you can burn to CD, but will work? I would think not as the software will attempt to write a LOG, but give it a go after booting froma W98SE OEM boot disk, a WinImage can be sought from:

http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

Have you tried to undertake an over-the-top repair install of W98?, which if you are not sure howto the W9x forum would be a good place to ask!

In fact, that has been suggested (a couple of times now) in 9x. Problems originate from the funner worm and subsequent repair attempts - and possibly other factors as well. It's not clear why the machine cannot reach Safe Mode, as this does not seem to be a symptom of funner.

F-prot had been recommended, and instructions for floppy setup passed along.

Many posts in several forums, not sure if progress is being made.

Thankyou jboy for that info. it seems again that this forum is the dumping ground for everything, I would not of bothered to reply except no one had picked up the totally way out first response.

In that vain two NT Batch questions today, JW was quick to remove thankfully.

Well, I sympathize with the OP, but I don't think he's making the most of Computing.Net by posting 'detail lite' questions in various forums. I had advised trying the S&V board, but follow-up & feedback in the original threads is the preferred method.

I suspect there's more going on with this machine than we know - if you're interested, here's the initial post

The people that respond to your original question(s) usually track them until the problem is resolved or else until it becomes a question of diminishing returns (whichever comes first)

I guess my best bet is to try with the realoading of windows on top. I have looked into other metheds ie. with f-prot and the like but I only have access to a computer at school, or a broken computer at home so making all sorts of disks and such doesn't seem to be working for me.

I have too many posts going (my fault) so i will not post here again unless necessary. THanks a ton guys

Thanks,
- John

If 'on top' means installing 98 without clearing the drive, it may not help.

Yes I know it is probably fruitless, but the poster does not understand PC's and trying the least destructive method first, it will not do any harm if undertaken right.

Sometimes it's hard to remember, but PCs can be pretty confusing to folks not steeped in the lore. Stuff we take for granted is a complete revelation to the uninitiated.
