I would like to run DOS 7.10 with the Win98 gui from a CD- I am in a number of different situations and often need to do quite a bit of writing- as I often don't know what computer I will be using, I would like to carry a copy of DOS 7.10 with either the Win 3.1 gui or the Win98 gui and some version of MS Word (I have versions from Word 6 through XP) as a backup that would run from a CD- granted I will have to save my stuff to a floppy, but that's okay and it would almost have to boot from a floppy, but that's okay, too. I am wondering if this is possible and if so, if anybody has any ideas on how to do it. Thanx!

AS this is a DOS forum will reply at that level.

In DOS you can make a bootable CD see:

Word5, the last DOS version is still available:

Personally would look at using a Iomega Parallel Zip/Jazz drive as the older DOS Driver is still available for download.

As to W3.x/9x, they have their own forums.

Thanks for the url... looks very interesting. Regarding the use of a zip drive... it's an intersting idea, but I have not run into that kind of drive on any of the computers yet so I'll contunue looking for the CD version.

The problem from booting from a CD is where will Windows write the temporary and swap files. A floppy is not big enough, if there is enough RAM maybe a RAMDISK. I assume you would not write on your borrowed host. Also the installed hardware in the registry would not match. All DOS would be the solution.

Ypu, I have to agree after doing some additional research- actually, the research was locating my copy of Word 5.5 for DOS and that should be more than sufficient. I may play with New Deal Office a little bit, but it's going to be straight DOS- thanks to all!
