Subject: Replacing lost DOS 6.22 files OS: DOS 6.22 CPU/Ram: P166/32MB

Comment: I have a need to expand all of the files in the DOS 6.22 Stepup, because some are missing from the \DOS directory. In order to have an archive of the correct files, I wish to expand all the files, without attempting to install DOS. However, some of the compressed files in the list are nearly identical except for the extention, such as FDISK.EX#, and FDISK.EX^. Would they both expand to become the same file, ie: FDISK.EXE? If so which one should I expand? If not, can I just expand them all with a switch following the expand command? Or would it be necessary to use a batch file to expand each file individually? Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Reply: (edit)The file on the install disk should read Fdisk.ex_ Typing expand a:\fdisk.ex_ c:\dos\fdisk.exe and hitting enter will expand the file to the DOS directory. .ls_=.lst .co_=.com and so forth.

Reply: (edit)WARNING - The files within the MS-DOS 6.22 StepUp are NOT the same as the installed files. They are update files to patch earler versions of 6x to 6.22 standard. Hense the differant file name to the Full Setup Disks. You need to use files from MS-DOS Full Install or Upgrade Disk Sets (with files named as SkipCox says) to replace missing files.

Reply: (edit)God yes, make sure the dates and file sizes match. Thanks for the reminder Mick...I didn't see the "Stepup" in Thomas' post.

Reply: (edit)OK, thanks for the info. I needed to know if the Stepup files were what I needed. Since they aren't, I went and installed DOS 6 on a test machine, and then stepped it up to DOS 6.22. Worked like a charm, although not quickly. Now I have my files for the DOS directory that is missing some. Thanks again

Reply: (edit)Glad to see you found a workaround to get the files you wanted. I did think about asking you if you had a older version to stepup which you have and worked it out as well! Thanks for coming back to tell us. Far to many never bother!
