Hi,

Yesterday I messed up my computer big time. I had to start up my computer using a boot disk. In order to start Windows from there, I had to run Scandisk. Scandisk however claimed to have insufficient conventional memory. What can I do? Thanks for your help!

This normally isn't a problem using a boot disk, but look at the autoexec.bat and config.sys files to remove any files, drivers that aren't needed. If you don't have these files on the boot disk, it's possible you have a memory problem, or a virus on the boot disk you are using.

I suggest you make another boot disk without adding any drivers to start with, and add scandisk and try it again.

But how do I make another boot disk, when I can't start Windows? If you can tell me that, I will try it and hopefully it'll solve the problem.

You don't need to make another boot disk. Modify the one you've already got.
The easiest way to boot, I would say, is to press F8 when it says "Starting Windows 95 ..." and select "Failsafe MS-DOS prompt". Then you should have plenty of memory.

From pure dos or a dos window

format A: /s

afterward copy scandisk.exe from c:\windows\command

In windows open my computer
right click on the drive A: icon and choose the format option... when the dialog box pops up click on the bottom option to "add system files" click on start.

Sounds like a virus to Me. I got insufficient memory errors all the time & could not run anything. I found out I did have a virus.

Ok. How can I discover if I have virus? I can only start my PC in DOS-mode. Thanks for your help.
