Yesterday I got an old 486 just for fun, with Windows 3.11 installed on it. When I installs some display drivers for view in 256 colors 800x600, it failed to load some files after the Win 3.11 splash screenI couldn't replace one file, so I tried to reïnstall Windows 3.11, but the computer crashed after typing "setup" [Enter] (floppy drive spinning around, but the computer did nothing anymore). So as a terrible disaster I had to format the disk (with Word 1.1 on it). But now when I try to install Dos 6.22, with disk 2, 3, and 4 it gives a read error with many files... does anyubody know how this comes or can somebody give me correct files. Or maybe I can install Dos from a CD Rom (by placing the 468's hard drive in my new computer and then after the installation placing it back in again). And if somebody knows how to install Windows 3.11, please help me!! I'm a nidwit on older systems!
Thank you in advance,
Rubix

Hi
Great to see you in two forums....
http://www.computing.net/windows31/wwwboard/forum/11321.htmlReinstall MSDOS/Windows see:
http://www.windowsreinstall.com/indexmsdos.htmIf you Floppies are giving you errors you either have a knackered floppy drive or disks. M$ software is licensed so where you get replacements would not like to say!

I've posted my questions on two forums because it's about two different operating systems.
Thank you for the site.
My disks nore my disk drive are knackered, I've done a surface scan on all of them, and there were no errors found... but well, I'll try to get a new series of disk then...

There are also Free non MS DOS versions available which will work with Win 3.1x
http://www.freedos.org/
http://horde.planetmirror.com/pub/drdos/DR-DOS.703/images/
There are more, search on Google.

Thank you all very much for the information. I've put all the information of the Dos 6.22 disks on CD Rom, booted my modern computer with the bootdisk fro www.bootdisk.com and installed Dos and Windows 3.11 from CD. Put the HD back into the 486. It now runs perfect!

We think that 386 enhanced mode
will not work (easily) with
FreeDOS, but if you want to test
and tweak with us, visit our IRC
channel (see FreeDOS homepage ->
"mailing lists"). The best we could
get for now is:With no EMM386 loaded, and with
MS or IBM HIMEM (one is included
with Win anyway), Win 3.1 worked
in /s (standard, "286") mode, but
you could not open a DOS box in it.
Windows programs worked, though.
Looks like we have to tune the
configuration a bit more to get the
rest to work as well.Things which ALWAYS need 386 enhanced
mode are: WfW3.11 and Win32s system.
