Subject: Problems with DOS |
Comment: I have purchased a new hard drive for my laptop. I then loaded DOS. Once this was done and all disks were removed, when I tried to start up the computer, I do not even get a prompt. When I try to find the fisked disk, it says there isn't one. No harddrive is recognized even. I know that it was partitioned. I do not want to have to buy another harddrive. Any help would be appreciated.

Reply: (edit)I fail to see how you loaded dos without even having a drive letter to install to. Re-partition the drive, then format it, then re-install dos. - W0rm

Reply: (edit)Use your DOS disk 1 to bootup the computer. Then run fdisk to check the partitions on your hard drive. If everything looks OK, use the sys.com command from DISK 1 to transfer the operating system to the hard drive: From the a:\ prompt sys.com c: or just plain old sys c:

Reply: (edit)I think I should explain better. I first installed the hard drive, then started the system the first time. I installed DOS 3. as per instructions. I partitioned the C drive etc.I then upgraded to DOS 6 as per instructions. The upgrade finished and said to remove all disks from drive and restart the computer. I did this. The only message was how many MB. There was no a prompt, c prompt etc. If I remove the hard drive, turn on computer with no disk in a drive, it comes up with a picture to put in a disk and press F1. Please remember that no hard drive is present, I can then get to an A prompt. Naturally at this time no hard drive will be recognized. If I turn on the computer with no hard drive then lift the keyboard, the computer has a shut off. If I place the hard drive in and close the keyboard cover, then put in disk in drive A, the hard drive still is not recognized. No fdisk is present etc. I am trying to figure out a way to get the hard drive recognized from the beginning. The problem occurred after the upgrade. Can I use a boot disk to begin with and have the hard drive recognized? Then could I format the hard drive and start again? If not what steps do I take to correct the problem? Or should I give up and get a new hard drive?
