Subject: Problems installing dos 6,22 OS: win 3.11 CPU/Ram: ??

Comment: I have formatted my old laptop. I have downloaded a boot disk from the net and my computer starts up with the boot disk. When I come to the a: I insert the first floppy disk to install dos 6.22. Everything seems to be working well but after 20 seconds the computer asks me to put in setup disk #1. The strange thing is that it is already in the floppy drive. I have tried all of my 4 disks but none works. What do I do wrong? Do I need to label my dos disks? I tried to install windows 3.1 without having dos installed (due to the above problem), but I had the same problem there (The computer asked me to insert floppy disk 1, although the disk was already in the computer). Can anybody help me?

Reply: (edit)Your MS-DOS Install Disks need to be labeled. At the DOS prompt type LABEL and type DISK 1 Thats DISK followed by six blank spaces 1 (Repeat with Disk 2 & 3 inserting the correct disk number) Not so important with Disk 4 as this is the 'Supplimental Disk' with its own Install Program.

Reply: (edit)With version6.22 I would have expected only 3 floppys. Normally the first lets you boot off it, and then either automatically goes into the installation procedure, or alternatively you manually type SETUP (or similar) and press return. Have you tried downloading from www.bootdisk.com. Once dos is installed, you can install w3.1, which runs under dos. Later windows versions run above dos as it is incorporated in them. Good luck - keep us posted.

Reply: (edit)Yes you are right Mike, MS-DOS 6.x comes on 3 x 1.44MB Disks. Some OEM's however bundled the MS-DOS 6.x Supplimental Diskette (one for each sub version) as well. I have copies of all 4 on my PowerLoad site for download. They contain all the older utilities not supplied with the new version. Avskedsfest I have just checked an orginal Microsoft Windows 3.1 HD Diskette (Disk 1 of 6) and it has no disk label. What it does have however is a file called DISK1 with the text disk1 within it. Check if you have this file. If not create one with a text editor and save it to disk. There is one such file on each of the 6 disks, with the same date as the other files.
