Subject: Problem in DOS can't load progs????OS: windows xpCPU/Ram: 128mb |
Comment: I am currently using win xp.and now i want to remove it and re-install it(& win98 after formating the Whole Drive...).i'm going to do this using a bootable disk at the start up. When i try to install it,it says to Run "SMARTDRIVE".I have it on the floppy then i gave the command: A:\smartdrv ....but nothing seems loading? It freezes.I can't do anything else.Whenever i try to install win98 it shows the same problem(doesn't load)What i have to do now?Plz help. 1. What is "Smartdrv" is it nessasary? When i try to install without smartdrive, the comp. stucks at the "Copying new files...". 2. My Hard Disk also shows a S.M.A.R.T. faliure. Is that could be the reason? How can i recover it?

Reply: (edit)From a Windows 9X or ME diskette dos prompt type: fdisk /mbr (hit enter) This should remove the remaining traces of Win XP.The SMART drive feature reports minute differences in the hard drive operation. It is unlikely that your hard drive is bad but if you think something is wrong, download a diagnostic diskette from the hard drive manufacturer website. You can disable the SMART feature in the computer bios. You can also erase the hard drive by writing zeros to it and use fdisk and format. http://computing.net/windows95/wwwboard/forum/161381.html If you download one only, begin with the Killdisk boot disk program, assuming you have only one hard drive. It is very easy to use and safe:don't be alarmed by the name.Good luck.
